Zen's quick guide to Mold Making.
first thing's first. materials.
silicon and catalyst. or 2 part silicon or something.
non toxic non hardening clay.
cheap plastic blocks or something similar.
plastic or paper cups and sticks for mixing.
weighing scale.
so first things first. what you're gonna make a mold out of. here im making more dungeon tiles. the curved and straight one.
since i just made these tiles they still need some brushing up.
gotta fill up the gaps like those with clay or else silicom will seep in and it might tear when you're removing the original item.
after filling up the gaps and making sure there's no excess clay. we put clay on the bottom of the item to prevent the silicon from going under.
here im using a glass pane as a base. its preferable if you can get a plastic board or acrylic since silicon doesnt stick to them.i use glass.
next we put blocks around it and hold it in place with clay. make sure the gap between the item and the blocks arent too thin or else it might tear.
next we mix the silicon amd catalyst. make sure to follow the instruction in the package. just mix a little at a time if you arent used to it yet.we only mix a little right now so we have more control with the flow of the silicon.
we cover the item in silicon just enough to cover it entirely. let the silicon "crawl" all over. try to keep a smooth stream in just one spot and slowly moving in areas with silicon, pushing it around. this is so we get all the details from the original item.
then we mix more Silicon and build it up until we get a nice flat surface on the top. make sure you dry in a level surface because it will affect your casts.
then we wait and pray!
