The gems on their robes and boots are based off of the Shlorpian’s ‘aura’ it’s custom to them, despite some being similar. Sometimes, Shlorpians might have more than one if granted a certain rank,the colour of it stays the same. In such case, Replicants will have the same shape as the more ‘dominant’ gem their originator has. But the colour truly describes the aura. It’s only the same shape temporarily to know who’s replicant it is. The gem can also change when the replicant is older if they choose to find out which one truly matches their aura. They can switch on and off between gems if they like, or if they were given a special rank, they can still switch between them but, must wear the rank one in appropriate moments or if the time ‘calls’ for it [like work] or a specific ceremony but on down time, it doesn’t matter. However, Shlorp prefers for the ones not given a special rank, but chose to get one when older that fits them [if it’s proven that another shape fits them, that is. Which determines based off of a certain scan. Sometimes, the scan doesn’t always determine a dominant gem. It will just scan for whatever can also fit it.] that they wear the more ‘dominant’ gem. It’s not unusual if an adult Shlorpian to have two gems. Sometimes, they can have 3. But, that is only if not only did they scan for another gem, but also were granted a certain rank.

Terry:

I think that Terry wasn’t given a rank [only because, based on what we seen, he doesn’t seem like the type who Shlorp would give one to since he wasn’t really conforming.] but, that gem we first saw him wearing was the one that he got when he was older. Terry would go with opportunity to have an ounce of originality. But, it didn’t happen to be the dominant one. It just happened to fit so he agreed to get it anyway. And the rectangle one we see him wear on Earth is the one he had as a replicant but, it just happened to be more dominant. Which is why Jesse has it. And wore it back on Shlorp to feel original. Plus it might’ve looked cooler to him. OR, when he got a scan, the rectangular one popped up, [and it just happened to be dominate] but he didn’t like it very much, so he wears the one he had since he was a replicant because it looked cooler in his opinion. Or tried to make a statement because it wasn’t dominant one. [or a mix of both, even if that preference wasn’t fully forced by the government.] The reason why he started to wear his dominant gem on Earth [on the rare occasion he decides to wear it] was because when Korvo noticed it was his dominant gem, by seeing it on Jesse’s robe, he wouldn’t stop nagging Terry about it. So he does it to make Korvo happy so he’ll stop. Or he wants to match Jesse because of their relationship. He likes to wear it horizontally. He wore the rectangle one at Korvo’s funeral in season one out of respect.

Rich Shlorpians:

Though their Replicants still have to have the dominant gem their originator has, Adult Rich Shlorpians don’t have to go through a process to change their gem. [they can if they wish to but, it’s not required.] Nor do they have to have a particular rank. They don’t even have to have one that fits them best, they have the luxury of changing it to whatever they want. Only thing they can’t change is the colour. They still have to have the colour that fits their aura.

Kabronius + Zelvod:

They were ether bored or didn’t like the gems they had as replicants and changed it to something they liked, or, the gems they have are of a rank they were given. They seem like the type to show off their rank to be true to Shlorpian culture. Or just because they can.
