Wang Yuezhi 王悅之 (1894-1937) was born in Taizhong, Taiwan, formerly known as Liu Jintang 劉錦堂, or Yuzhi 月芝. He went to study in Japan in 1915, and entered Tokyo Art School, under the supervision of Fujishima Buji. He graduated and came back to China in 1921, and taught at the Western Painting Department of Beijng Arts School. In 1922, he, together with Li Yishi, Wu Fading etc., established Apollo Society, the first Western painting research organization in Beijing. In 1924, he prepared to establish privately operated Beijing College of Fine Arts and was invited to act as the director of the Formative Art Research Institute of Peking University. 

In the summer of 1934, Wang Yuezhi created large-scale oil painting Adherents in Taiwan, to show his sadness towards the subjugation of his home country, in the hope that people won't forget Japanese occupation of Taiwan. In the picture, there are three praying woman. The one in the middle had a model of globe in hand, and her left hand has an eye on it, just like Goddess of Mercy. The painter said the eye was looking at Taiwan. The techniques of the picture are also unique. He used the wolf-hair brush and thin oil painting colors to paint it on silk scroll. The plane composition is another tried of nationalization of oil painting. The stamp on the picture also showed his love for the country.
