I wanted to create a few winter-themed abstract paintings for the holiday season. I’m pleased with how this turned out. Trees are my absolute favorite things to paint! I went a little crazy with the mica paints on both this and the second one. 🙃

For this small acrylic painting, I felt inspired by Tobias Kwan's surreal work; where he uses quite abstract marks and decorative elements, my flowers felt more concrete somehow (even though they are just blobs). I wanted to try rubber stamps to suggest more detail than painted - on the Yupo paper this was painted on, the result isn't that impressive because the paint gets this smudgy texture. Might be better on paper. Because the synthetic paper gives up the paint without hesitation, I had to cover it all in transparent gesso before using coloured pencils for details. I painted on watercolor paper and yupo paper and then cut them into the larger shapes. I added some lavender mulberry paper and gold ink to finish off this little piece.
