Does anyone else find it deeply unsettling that, as soon as you marry someone in Skyrim, they lose their sense of identity? They lose their previous lifestyle, profession, and their unique flavor of dialogue. It's even more apparent with candidates with a lot of personality like Jenassa. With Ysolda, it makes sense that she wants to open a shop, but she also gives up on her dreams to run the Bannered Mare one day and learning the merchant's trade in an active way, travelling the land trading with the caravans.
You uproot them from their homes and just walk in, get food from them, get some gold, ask about any children, and leave for Gods-only-know how long. The least changed are the Housecarls, but it feels exploitative to marry them when they're already your indentured man and lady servants.
Long story short, that's why I now choose to be forever single in Skyrim!
And it has nothing at all to do with Brynjolf and Mercer being un-marriageable. Nope!
I caught myself sinning the other day (thinking of romancing Karlach in my next playthrough when my previous two I romanced Shadowheart) but quickly repented If you romance a character in a video game that is your wife/husband for LIFE (in that game) and you SHOULD NOT cheat on them "Oh but is in another playthrough" - words of fiends who make excuses. YOU WILL romance Judy from cyberpunk and die with her, YOU WILL romance Ysolda from skyrim and die with her, YOU WILL romance Leah from stardew valley and die with her. the ONLY other option is a polycule, if you're into that the romance bonds you forge in games are SACRED, and I will NOT be ashamed to speak the truth and shame sinners and cheaters
Appreciate y’all giving Ambarys some love while I made absolutely nothing new. Have some Ysolda studies as thanks.
ROUND 1 — Match 181 of 286
Ysolda (The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim)
Identity: Bi/Pansexual, explicit Notes: Can be married by a Dragonborn of either gender. Propaganda: "ysolda is such a favourite because she’s basically the most “normal person with big dreams” in whiterun, and it makes her stand out in a game full of dragons and prophecies. she’s polite, she’s friendly, she’s got that vibe of someone who already has a plan in her head and is just waiting for her chance to make it real. everyone else is like “the world is ending” and ysolda is like “anyway, business.” and i love that she’s quietly kind of shady?? in a way that’s not “evil,” just practical. she wants to run a trading business, she’s willing to deal with whoever she has to deal with, and she’s not sitting around waiting for a hero to hand her a life, she’s building one. it’s honestly refreshing. she feels like someone who would absolutely survive in skyrim by being smart and making friends and keeping her goals in front of her. i’m very fond of her."
vs. Ronan Lynch (The Raven Cycle)
Identity: Gay, explicit Notes: Referred to as gay by both himself and other characters in-text, and later enters a relationship with Adam (a man). Propaganda: "ronan is the kind of character who looks like pure attitude and violence from the outside, and then you realise he’s basically held together by loyalty and grief and a terrifying amount of love. he’s intense about everything - people, family, promises, anger - and he doesn’t do anything halfway. if he cares, it’s all-in. if he’s protecting something, he’s not asking permission. and that makes him so satisfying because he doesn’t perform softness for anyone, but he still feels deeply. and i love how he’s not written as “bad boy who secretly has a heart.” he’s rough because that’s how he moves through the world, but he’s also thoughtful in his own way, and he’s got this very specific code about who he’ll hurt and who he won’t. he’s also funny, but not in a jokey way - more like he’ll say something blunt and brutal and it’s either the funniest thing you’ve ever heard or you’re like “are you okay.” his relationships hit because you can tell he doesn’t have many people, so when he chooses you, that’s it."
Who should advance?
Ysolda
Ronan Lynch
