COLLAR-FREE IS THE WAY TO BE (SAFE DURING OFF-LEASH PLAY) Wearing collars (or even harnesses) in an off-leash play setting is dangerous. Let me repeat that β WEARING COLLARS (OR HARNESSES) IN AN OFF-LEASH PLAY SETTINGS IS DANGEROUS (EVEN DEADLY)! There are several reasons why a responsible off-leash play facility bans the use of collars and harnesses while on the premises. First, collars can be used as leverage during otherwise appropriate play. A dog can, quite literally, βtake downβ itβs playmate by grabbing the collar. We never want one dog to have an advantage over another dog. That leads to trouble, inevitably. Also, teeth, feet, muzzles, and jaws can become tangled in a playmateβs collar. The trapped dog will panic and struggle to get free causing the collar-wearer to choke. And the trapped dog often sustains injuries to their teeth, jaws and toes trying to escape. Worst case scenario, dogs have been strangled to death in situations like this - and it is totally preventable. Lastly, if a dog takes rest breaks during the day - and they should β and a crate is used for those breaks, collars and dangling tags can get caught in the bars which can cause injuries or worse.
