You shared your music with me. You asked about my favorite kind of music. We seem to share in our love of music and the relief it’s offered us in the past. But then you asked me about my playlists and if I had one specifically for being sad. I said that I did - you did too. Then you shared your music with me. You gave me the top 4 saddest songs on your playlist. You said you’ve even made people cry. I took it as a challenge. We spent two hours talking about music and what we love the most about the songs we were sharing. It felt as though I was seeing your soul for the first time. I was finally getting to see a side of you I have had yet to see. I couldn’t get over how personal and vulnerable it felt to share this small bit of yourself with me. I got a glimpse of who you are when no one else is looking.
I have listened to these songs endlessly the last week. In everything I do, I listen to them. Every time I listen to them, I think of you. Now I’m thinking of you endlessly as well. How did it happen so fast? This wasn’t something I was looking for. I know it can’t work. We’re too different where it matters. But, I lay in bed and think about how desperately I want to talk to you. As Dermot Kennedy says, “I used to dream that you would talk to me.” I lay here with the world on chest and butterflies in my gut.
Anxiety and attraction feel too close to the same thing.
I’m filled with immense sadness at the thought of not having you so near. I’m angry that this time of my life is filled with “oh hello, I just met you and now we have to say goodbye.” It’s the most frustrating thing to leave someone when you’re only just getting to know who they really are. To see the magic that is them and the way they move within this world. How am I to know your favorite flavor ice cream? How you think the world came to be? Mountains or beaches? Sunrises or sunsets? All of the small things that are so important. I don’t want to watch you leave my life in any way, shape, or form.
Do I tell you that?
These songs swirl in my head now. They fill me with joy in that we share something now - for no matter how feel about me, you will think of me when you hear these songs. They are a connection that we will now always have. But, they also fill me with great sadness and belong on that specific playlist.
And I couldn’t think of a better way in which to describe falling in love with someone you aren’t sure you can even have.
