But one Netflix insider with links to the commercial arm of the streaming giant told MailOnline that the reviews have 'worried' the bosses.

So what happened to those freaks in the end?

Kali - the abused woman of colour who had strange powers. She ran away to try to be her own person. All her friends were murdered. She was kidnapped and tortured non-stop for an unknown amount of time. She felt she would have no choice but to commit suicide to escape. She was left in mortal danger by Hopper. She died pointlessly because of someone else's reckless actions. And finally, she became a plot device for an improbable fantasy to comfort the straight white boy.

El/Jane - another abused woman with strange powers who ran away. She was exploited by almost all the men she tried to be close to - her surrogate fathers and her boyfriend. She thought being used as a tool was a sign of love. She begged to be loved and was gaslighted. She was used by everyone and her worth lay in her superpowers, not herself. Her attempt to exercise agency was played for laughs. Her only successful exercise of agency was to choose to die, believing it was for the best for everyone else. And finally, even that was taken away from her for an improbable fantasy to comfort the toxic boyfriend.

Will - a bullied gay boy. He was abused by his father. He was systematically tortured and exploited for five years. He was ashamed of himself for being 'weak'. He endured the boy he loved slapping him in the face with homophobia. He used his own feelings to prop up that boy's toxic heterosexual relationship. He endured that boy's wildly inconsistent behaviour towards him and he forgave him for it. He even forgave his abuser. He was forced to come out to a room that included strangers out of fear that something worse would happen if he didn't, and he denied his love because he thought he had no right to be loved. And finally, he was cast as the lone exile who went to gay bars to find connection in an improbable fantasy that soothed a straight boy's conscience.

This is not championing the outcast. This is telling the outcast that any happiness they find is illusory at best, temporary at worst, and in the end their only function is to make a straight white boy feel better about himself.
