Since I've been using Hype Machine to help me locate artists I enjoy on Bandcamp in an attempt to wean off Spotify, I've made it a goal this year to use every Bandcamp Friday to promote some of my favourite artists and albums.

In honour of Black History Month, I figured I'd use this first post to recommend some of Black artists/lead bands I've discovered on the website:

Lizzie No, an alt-folk singer-songwriter from NYC.

Amythyst Kiah, a queer folk-rock artist from Tennesse.

Yola, who you may recognize from her portrayal of Sister Rosetta Tharpe in Elvis (2022). She delivers a mix of country, soul, and r&b (as well as my favourite rendition of "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road").

LOWHENCY PIERRE, a Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter whose sound is a blend of funk, r&b, and indie rock.

Lesibu Grand, a "new wave punk" band from Atlanta, whose influences include Blondie, Talking Heads, and the Pixies.

Meet Me @ The Altar, an all-girl pop punk band.

Lastly, the Ethiopiques Series, which has been promoting artists from Ethiopia since the late '90s, has digitally re-released a 1976 album by the late Muluken Mellesse. If you're interested in Ethiopian jazz, I recommend giving him a listen.
