On July 28, 1945, a Japanese suicide aircraft Yokosuka K5Y “Willow” struck the American destroyer USS Callaghan near Okinawa. After the hit and subsequent explosions of its ammunition, the ship sank. Callaghan became the last Allied ship sunk by a kamikaze.
