My mouth is tired from fake smiling at you in your yellow kitchen.

My teeth are numb

when I finally ask you that question.

A “yes” and a “no”

are hooked to opposite corners of your mouth. 

I don’t have to hear it 

to know that your answer is not an answer.

I touch the closing walls of a 

“maybe” on your lips. 

I am tired of hearing goodbyes behind closed doors.

Something is making 

heat in my eyes. My heart is soaked

with life and fear. Your eyes have that same white-noise buzz. The same one

from the night I cooked you stir fry

and the vegetables were 

too soft. You told me

I was average

and I pretended it didn’t bother me.

Later that night, I snuck out of the wrong

end of your bed. I carried my “yes”

all the way home 

for weeks

and it seems like my fault. I've been turning

so many directions

this year, that I am back where

I started. I kept my distance

and you apologized. I kept measurements

of you like it could predict

your sincerity. I don't know how to crack

a neck without snapping it. And you are so stiff.

It is all my fault. The crosswalk sign behind you

kept flashing "stop." Its blunt

orange fingertips glowing behind you.

I paid attention / decided not to understand. And now you are stuck in my
