My amazing wonderful extraordinary goat Cheeser I must ask you, what’s ur art process 🥹❤️🩹 like how do you go about shading and rendering ur drawings
ofc color is how you want to pick it but if you want my tip, I usually pick my colors via the mood I wanna tell. The colors and how saturated or light it is tells people the emotion of the piece because of our pre-knowledge and association with certain colors to certain moods (warm colors like yellow and orange tells us it's joyous while cold colors like blue or purple has a more sad and rich feeling, it's kinda oversimplified but you get it ).
as for how to pick them? generally I take the base color and shift it towards the main color of the whole piece like cuphead's cup head shifting toward orange or pink on the color wheel and some adjustment on the vaules ofc.
since i mostly use muter color i'll be painting with middle cuphead!
I make a new layer on top of my sketch layer and start painting!! for shading I usually start by color picking the base color and shift the color values down as well as the hue down on the color wheel!! remember only 2 colors for shadow and light on the piece first!!
it's also important to to know where ur light source is as if you want to make dramatic lighting it's important to keep the shadow consistent! general rule is that shadows are located at the opposite side of the light source (like shadows being at the bottom left when the light source is top right)
Once I got the basic shading down, I usually go ham on the details, idk how to really explain on the detailed rendering other then I start picking colors and changing it darker or lighter and over paint on it which gives the painting more depth.
Sometimes I merge all three of my sketch, base color and over paint into one to really render it. mine is a little messy but it's okay as i like it better messy if you wanna render it cleaner you can!!
it's also important to understand how certain materials interact with the light which can change it's shadow, like cuphead's cup head being made of porcelain which makes it so that the shadow on his head has more bounce light and highlights then his clothes!! that one is probably something u need to study urself tho.....
it'd also important to understand that background affects the lighting and shadows of the colors too! like if cuphead is in the woods full of trees and green some of that green from the envoirment will get reflect on to his clothes with some being more pronounced then other depend on the material!
i also use lots of overlays and multiply layers to really contrast the lighting shadows more as, awesome pro trip, values are really important in making a dramatic or eyecatching piece that's why in a lot of famous old works there's a very clear lights and darks! you can check ur vaules easily by making a layer and filling it with gray and set it to color or satuation. like this:
see how the brighten parts are the parts where I want you guys to look at first when you see the drawing.
Then lastly I put a noise overlay on it, on krita there's a filter for it but u can also just get a noise texture on google!
Of course some last bit of advise:
study and use references!
Don't be afraid to use adjustment filters like color balances, and tone curves. as it both saves you a lot of time and good for learning how colors works! u are not less of an artist if you use them!
And lastly, Experiment! YOU DON'T HAVE TO PAINT LIKE ME TO BE GOOD! This is just how I paint my paintings! If you wanna make stuff more stylized or cartoony or colorful! Do it! Art is more then realism paintings, do what makes you happy! even I don't always paint like this as I like being joyous and use bolder lines and colors!
anyway, hope you guys have a nice day!
also sorry if i'm not good at explaining..... and my spelling and grammar is kinda ass....
