How does communicating with your deities look like for you? You’re the first person I’ve seen practicing paganism and would love to learn more about it!
Hiii! Thanks so much for the ask and I’m so sorry for being late to answer it!
Okay so to start I will say that my pagan practice was initially very separate from other pagans because when I was younger and started following the gods, specifically Loki, I knew no other pagans and definitely no other Lokeans, so how I communicate with Loki may be different from a lot of pagans, but of course that’s the case with any individual practicing since your practice can really be however you want it to, and it’s completely up to you.
But I’ll be more than happy to let you know how it works for me!
1. And this is a pretty common one, pendulum. I don’t actually use the pendulum very frequently because it can easily pick up a lot of energies and be manipulated by other forces, maybe physically deceased loved ones or other deities than the one I’m trying to contact, so I find it pretty safe to use a pendulum to communicate with Loki at an altar I set up for them or when his presence is especially strong. Overall though, I still don’t use a pendulum for god-communication all that often, though that may just be because in my experience Loki doesn’t really like to be limited to yes-no answers.
2. Another common one that I use-tarot. I love tarot, Loki loves tarot, it’s one of the methods I use the most frequently by far.
Loki really likes tarot too because it’s not at all limited to yes-no answers, and with tarot when I have a deck specifically to use with Loki, or even if I just ask for a message from Him, I don’t feel much need to worry about doing it over an altar.
Though Loki has actually hijacked my reading with another god before, but we got that sorted out.
After having worked with tarot for a decent amount of time now, I now feel confident enough writing down a message how I see Loki saying it to me, if that makes sense.
3. Meditation/visualization/breathwork/dreams
I suppose this one is common(?) but I’m not entirely sure, I’ve just done it forever because it’s been something I’ve done with my family for a long time
My mom is a Christian witch and I’ve learned a lot of intuitiveness from her
So for meditation, I have several practices that work for me personally-
One is breathwork, just a simple four seconds in-hold breath for four seconds-four seconds out-hold breath for four seconds-and so on is what I do often because I have to focus on it and it makes thinking of anything else hard so if Loki chooses to send me a mental message then, it’s usually pretty clear what is her speaking to me and what are my thoughts-because obviously you need to be careful with that.
And for visualization, I often try to envision some tool of transportation-
Originally it was a door but it’s since become a rune-covered lantern that when I take hold of it, my scenery will automatically change. The basic idea is that if I visualize something very clearly and convince my mind that it can realistically take me somewhere else, it will let it do so mentally, and through that I often see Loki, or He takes me somewhere to show me something or give me a message-
This is especially effective if you do it right before you go to sleep or if you’re in a sleepy state because your brain is less likely to affect the visualization
I don’t know if this is something others do but it is a way I frequently communicate with Them
Also if you just meditate outside with no expectations whatsoever, He’ll likely send you a sign in nature, through a spider, crow or something along those lines-whatever creature She tends to send you as a sign.
4. On that subject, signs. Loki sends a lot of signs to me via animals or plants or something of that sort.
Usually, He sends me flies, spiders, snakes, crows and vultures, occasionally lizards, salamanders, foxes and coyotes as well. In terms of plants They’ll send me brightly colored leaves and dandelions most often, and of elements usually fire in different forms.
Signs can be different for everyone though, that’s something for you and whatever deity you work with to work out. For instance Loki started sending me vultures because I told Them ‘hey, vultures kinda remind me of you in their role in nature’ and then He started sending them.
Also important to note I think, some gods will send the same animals-for instance Loki and Nótt both send coyotes. And also sometimes an animal is ‘just’ an animal (obviously every animal is their own spirit to be valued and respected) and there’s no higher meaning from the gods behind you seeing it. So yeah. Discernment is pretty important, as with all of this.
5. Clairaudience. I don’t know that this is the correct term for what I do, I’ve heard conflicting definitions, but it’s the closest term I could find for this way I communicate. And this one is one Loki chooses to use very commonly with me, Rán does as well though not quite as much, whereas other deities have less commonly.
I feel as if clairaudience is in a sense what Loki uses to make it clear He is my patron deity and therefor communicates with me the most.
Clairaudience is also a form of deity communication you have to be very careful with. Because for people with psychosis, delusions, hallucinations or even just someone with invasive thoughts, this one can get very confusing and for some spiral out of control. That’s not to scare you off because it’s not a scary thing. It’s just important, as with every sign and message, to understand that this may not be a message, you may just be misinterpreting the message, it could be meant very differently, or nothing at all. This goes for all forms of communication in any belief, just use your own judgement, intuition coupled with what you know about yourself and the world around you. Stay grounded.
Sometimes other beings even impersonate deities, sort of like with pendulums. Unfortunately a lot of times minds are just as easily swayed. But in my experience there are always telltale signs.
Now, I want to be clear again because when I first started actually looking into this rather than just doing my own practice as I had been, I started to get scared, discouraged and doubtful and I really don’t want to be the reason anyone else feels that way about their practice or just in general lol.
These things are important because they’re valid concerns but it’s a lot less complicated than I’m making it sound. Primarily, just always think before you listen to any ‘voices in your head’. Like, if some voice in your head tells you to jump off a cliff, don’t do it?
✨critical thinking skillssss✨
And gods are usually pretty clear and chill with newbies.
Okay, so, sorry-
I just feel like Clairaudience is important to be clear about for anyone reading.
So now, what is Claraudience for me and how do I use it? Clairaudience is just hearing voices of my deities or sometimes ancestors or other kinds or spirits. (Again, someone let me know if there’s a better definition for this form of communication. This is the best one I could find.)
I hear Loki a lot this way, oftentimes at altars, during prayers, whilst cleaning His crystals or something like that but often just at random.
He’ll just add Their own little input into anything I’m doing and that’s how we communicate perhaps the most (he’s a talker).
For me, this is not a physical external voice, it’s in my mind but not my own thought though it can manifest similarly. It feels so distinct, abrupt, out of place and separate from me that I know it’s not me. But it’s still in my mind enough that I can be certain it’s not some sort of auditory hallucination or someone actually speaking to me.
5. Prayer beads
I’ve made my own Lokean prayer beads and hope to make ones for the other deities I follow as well. I’ll just rub them back and forth between my fingers methodically as I pray either verbally or mentally to kind of get myself into a rhythm with them and through that Loki sometimes sends me messages because my mind is occupied, a bit like meditation. Okay, actually a lot like meditation.
6. Automatic writing (again same thing with the term-seems like what I use to communicate but just the closest thing I could find)
I also use this one pretty frequently, being a writer
Automatic writing is the technique of channeling-in my case mostly gods or ancestors-through writing, and being a writer I use this technique very often.
Usually I meditate, make sure I’m in a good headspace, set an intention or reach out to a particular deity or ancestor and just start writing whatever comes. This a simple and overall pretty noncomplicated technique which I love.
7. Sometimes things just happen! Sometimes you feel like your god is embracing you or giving you a pat on the back, sometimes you see a sign that’s so much like something you think they’d tell you from a post to a billboard to a book quote, and I’m not a huge believer in coincidences honestly. But whether you are not, you can be skeptical while also keeping an open mind and heart to the world around you! :D
Okay so I think that’s all! I really hope this is helpful! I hope I didn’t sound like too much of a know-it-all or like I didn’t know what I was talking about, I’m not too used to talking about these things so I don’t know how I came across here
Also again I’m speaking purely from personal experience
And I’m so soooo very sorry for the wait @schrottielol (tagging you to make sure you get the notif), I found this in my drafts again, then it got buried, then just today I remembered it and decided to finish it! Sorry if it’s a bit rushed as well! I hope this is what you were looking for and I hope you’re doing well! :)
