The Houston Equal Rights Ordinance (HERO) is Houston’s nondiscrimination law. It protects 15 different categories of Houstonian from discrimination in city employment and city services, city contracts, public accommodations, private employment and housing. It prohibits discrimination based on an individual’s SEX, RACE, COLOR, ETHNICITY, NATIONAL ORIGIN, AGE, FAMILIAL STATUS, MARITAL STATUS, MILITARY STATUS, RELIGION, DISABILITY, SEXUAL ORIENTATION, GENETIC INFORMATION, GENDER IDENTITY, AND PREGNANCY.
WE (Primer Grey & Lauren Marek) created this project to share some of the stories and faces of the Houstonians protected by the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance (HERO). A “YES” on Prop 1 is a vote for the rights of our families, friends, and neighbors. This project should tell the world that Houston does not tolerate discrimination. It should remind Houstonians that we take action to counter those who would perpetuate discrimination, racism, fear, and hate.
We hope to bring light to the faces of the people for whom this ordinance bears the greatest strength; and to give voice to their stories. This project was designed to tell the city that HERO cannot fail; to tell the world that Houston is NOT home to discrimination, bigotry, or the subjugation of the diverse population of people that make Houston who it is today. We are a city where every single one of us should be treated fairly and equally. -
