No foe shall spare a friend, nor stranger call one brother, By politics the lines are carved against another. For soldiers and for rulers there’s a debt to pay — The tyrant’s thirst for conquest brings each troop decay.

Among the rotting dead, the peace of joy is gone, Within the burnt-out homes no fading laughs live on. No soul returns alive from that last bitter fray, Nor shall the dead thereafter close their eyes by day.
