Jewish hat

Combed cotton, linen, modern replica based on the emblem of Prague's Jewish Town

The Jewish hat was introduced as a badge of shame in the 13th century. It gradually lost its negative connotation for Jews after other items of clothing came to serve as a Jewish badge. The hat became a means of self-identification, as demonstrated by the fact that it was incorporated into the emblem of Prague's Jewish Town (placed in the center of the Star of David) in the 1st quarter of the 16th century. In the 1840s a widespread but unfounded claim was spread that the head covering in the emblem was actually a Swedish cap that commemorated the Jewish involvement in the defence of Prague against the Swedes in 1648.
