I just started yellow face, and there's this scene where Athena Liu's book is being edited to more or less make it more mild and palatable. And I have so many thoughts about RF Kuang, a woman who's first book was an incredibly gory painfully realistic fantasy retelling of war in china between colonizers which had it's most brutal chapter (golyn niis) taken from the rape of Nanjing, writing a woman who wrote a gory retelling of a war where a scene of soldiers hanging themselves and then their fellow soldiers being told to kill themselves elsewhere so they're not eyesores being taken from history, and having her work be altered to remove the brutal historical accuracy and put white people in a less "evil" role even though they were fucking evil.
