Ellie hesitated, sparing a moment’s glance from her unwanted visitor to survey the street. She couldn’t see any of them, and the sheer feeling of emptiness their minds brought was absent for the moment, but she could never be too sure. 

A request to prove it died in her throat; she didn’t know enough about how the things worked to have anything to go off of, but she could only assume they couldn’t speak. If the kid was in fact alive, he looked a little too scared to pose as a real threat.
