My song of the Year 2024 is 'Syrena' by Kiki Rockwell

When I first heard this song and watched the video, my jaw literally hit the floor in astonishment. I couldn't believe that something on this level even existed.

Not only is the composition of the song beautiful in pure musical sense. The lyrical and visual storytelling is of genius levels. This is like an enchanting five minute long fairy tale that evokes astonishing level of emotion in its short runtime.

Lyrically, it's nothing short of remarkable piece of art. Especially the rising chant of

Drink my blood, break my bones This grave will fit me better than your landlocked home

my #2 song of Year 2024 is 'Gasoline' by Lotte Gallagher

some songs happen to catch my attention immediately and I become hooked on the first or second listen. some songs take a while to really sink in, though, and 'Gasoline' was like that for me.

I had already listened to some songs by Lotte by the time I heard 'Gasoline', and at first I almost dismissed it. But then I kept listening to it again and again, and it kept drawing me in. It will probably top my Spotify wrapped for the year. Maybe if I had listened to it 20 more times, it would have made my song of the year. ;)

I find it hard to explain what is it that I like so much about the song. I can only write it off to 'vibes'. One thing I will note is that Lotte's spotify bio describes her having a 'blasé air', and that's definitely something that I love about her art. The song feels deeply personal, and yet her expression in the video is utterly indifferent and almost apathetic. It's a fascinating juxtaposition.

My #3 song of Year 2024 is 'TV Car Chase' by Sunday (1994)

Sunday (1994) is the second British/American band in the top 10. The only difference with Still Corners is that Sunday (1994) has British guy and American girl, and Still Corners have it the other way around. :)

Anyway, this band popped on my radar out of nowhere and had several great songs to choose from for the playlist. I went with 'TV Car Chase' because it was the dreamiest and catchiest of them all. I can't stop humming along 'my head is in the oven' whenever I'm listening. In some ways, their music reminds me of Mazzy Star, which is not a comparison I would throw around lightly. <3

My #4 song of the Year 2024 is 'The Feminine Urge' by The Last Dinner Party

Every time I listen to a new TLDP song, I legit think that it's the song of the year. :) It's true, though, because this song has it all - the usual TLDP dramatics, elaborate music video, insane lyrical twists (I am a dark red liver stretched out on the rocks), everything.

One thing that I wanted to remark about TLDP is how easy it would have been to make Abigail the front and center of the band because she has beauty and rizz off the charts. But then so do all the other girls. And I love that they have found the way to split the spotlight and give everyone their moments in the sun, through the musical composition of their songs and live performances where everyone can showcase their talents, or in their artsy music videos. These girls just seem to be having insane levels of fun as a group. :)

My #5 song of Year 2024 is 'Today Is the Day' by Still Corners

I've been a fan of Still Corners for many years. Whenever I've compiled a playlist for one of my writing projects, there will always be a song or two by Still Corners. There's something about their music that gives a big boost to my creativity.

Still Corners for me have always been the most road trip type of music. If I was the type to get into the car and just start driving in a random direction, I would pick Still Corners as my soundtrack. It's impossible to beat these dreamy and relaxing vibes.

My #6 song of Year 2024 is ' You And I' by London Grammar

When London Grammar broke out back in 2013-14, I really thought that I had found a new favorite band. However, their next couple of albums left me deeply unimpressed and I felt that they were moving away from what made them so amazing in the first place.

Their strength has always been Hannah Reid's vocal abilities. Her voice is what made early songs such as 'Nightcall', 'If You Wait' and 'Wasting My Young Years' legendary to me. For whatever reason, the songs on their next albums just didn't seem a good fit for Hannah to showcase her abilities. They were the kind of songs that could be sung by just about anyone. I don't know why it happened. Maybe Hannah had some issues with her voice? It happens to many artists.
