Unsubstantiated headcanon of the day: When they were in their early twenties, Katara and Yakone debated before the Water Tribe council of elders over the repatriation of Hama from the Fire Nation prison and the international legal status of bloodbending. In a compromise between the two young masters, Hama was ultimately brought back to the Southern Water Tribe, but the art of bloodbending was outlawed. Hama was intrigued by the back and forth between the two powerful waterbenders and not so subtly suggested that they should marry and lead a united Water Tribe. Katara was not amused by this commentary. Angered by the fact that bloodbending was criminalized while firebenders continued to wield deadly lightning unconstrained, Yakone broke bad and reigned terror in Republic City with his Red Monsoon Triad, while Katara used her powers as a council member to stop him. Push and pull, tui and la, equal and opposite—the rival prodiges could never truly be rid of each other.

On today’s episode of anger at Bryke for neglecting Katara — why tf wasn’t Katara a main character of the Yakone flashback when bloodbending was HER arc in the original???
