Today had, simply put, been a whirlwind.
It was a day off from her usual job at SciOps, which one would imagine would ensure things went smoother than normal, with no confidential projects or unexpected explosions from the other side of the lab, but no. Her luck wasn’t that good, it seemed.
She hadn’t been sure what was happening - none of the screaming shoppers had stopped for long enough to inform her - but there was clearly some sort of incident occurring at the mall.
Escape seemed to be impossible, and as she ran over the bits and pieces she’d picked up about field work, she decided that the safest option would be to find somewhere to hide until she had a better understand of the situation. A coffee shop on the second floor seemed the best place to pick- it gave her a high vantage point, and she knew there were multiple exits should it become necessary to run.
As she reached the coffee shop, she heard movement from inside. She continued forwards cautiously, unsure if the source of the movement was simply a terrified bystander or the perpetrator of this incident. Unfortunately, Simmons had no field training, and despite her best efforts her footfalls were too heavy, alerting the other of her presence.
She wasn’t given enough time to work out whether he was dangerous or not - the moment she met eyes with him her entire world burst into colour and her lips formed an ‘o’ as she came to realise what this meant.
She allowed herself a moment of shock as she processed this information, before she hurried into the shop, hesitantly approaching him. She didn’t know how she was supposed to feel about this.
His words sliced through her confused thoughts, and without meaning to, she found herself speaking in an irritated tone. “Well, obviously. I’m not meant for anyone. In fact, the very concept of soulmates is an outdated one - it speaks of predetermination, and has rather unpleasant implications about the nature of choice and free will. Frankly, it’s an area that even most leading researchers misunderstand, though I can’t say that I expect you to understand that.”
