In the spring of 1926, Douglas was authorized to convert the last O-2 observation plane (S/N 25-380) to an attack plane. This aircraft would become the first of the attack series. The Douglas XA-2 was evaluated against the Curtiss XA-3 (a conversion of the Curtiss O-1B observation plane). The Curtiss aircraft won the competition and became the U.S. Army Air Corp's front-line attack aircraft during the late 1920s.
