Hi there! As a fanfic writer who writes x reader/reader insert fanfiction, I want to make my fics more inclusive. Is there certain language/terms/ways to describe things that can be used to make the fic more Race inclusive and not make it sound like the insert is intended to be White? And is there terms/language that I should avoid using that could be offensive?
Right so I'm going to preface this by saying that I am white, so I am not qualified to give in depth advice about this.
There are blogs run by people of color that would be way better to go to for this advice, such @/creatingblackcharacters (I have to emphasize to only ask a writer for advice if they've already said they are willing to give advice and answer your questions on this topic. Do not assume random writers are willing or obligated to answer your questions or educate you)
The only general advice I can give is to just not assume that your reader is white
If there's ever a time when you feel the need to describe skin color, let your reader insert their own using an abbreviation like s/c
If you're describing hair, include hair texture (h/t) alongside hair color and hair length.
Aside from that, do research. Don't just rely on people answering your questions, you also need to go out of your way to find answers
