I feel sorry for Percy, but donât you think he ends up playing the victim a bit too much? I mean, sure, heâs got problems and traumas linked to a lack of care and affection, on top of the other issues the family faces, like Crowny and Orlaâs death. However, all Percy needs to do is go to therapy and look for a job to break out of this shell of being a poor, pitiful, forgotten son â and if he needs to distance himself from his family, so much the better. Besides, I reckon Wendy might be just the person to help him get back on the right track.
I mean I think itâs very easy to say you should do this and that to someone whoâs had a shitty upbringing. Itâs kind of like telling an addict âget cleanâ or anyone in any struggle, like yeah if youâre depressed you should go to therapy and get on antidepressants. Thereâs a common believe that people who are really suffering donât know what to do to to alleviate itâthey do. They know the steps to take but actually taking them is harder than that
Children who are abused many times take years to be able to leave those environments and even longer to get out of the mentality that was born out of that abuse
When youâve been told you are worthless are your life, neglected by your mother and beaten by your father, you tend to actually wholeheartedly believe that you are so utterly useless and worthless that no matter what you do you will never been anything more that that. So, why try?
Idk I feel people who have never experienced think itâs very easy to leave abusive situations when thatâs all youâve ever known. The abuse becomes almost comforting because life is scary without it since youâve never known how to live without it
You can ask the same of Sally and Crowny, why didnât they leave if being children of their parents was awful? But then youâd have to ask real abused kids why they didnât leave? Thereâs no magical age where immediately your brain turns a switch on to say âyour parents are wrong, you are a valuable person, they canât control you anymore.â That takes therapy and a support system
