Hoo boy, okay first thingâs first, the art.
The four issuse of this part of Worlds Unite were drawn by Edwin Huang, whoâs illustrations are usually more fitting for comic covers because damn his pencilling leaves a lot to be desired. I donât have have any problems with the guy nor his style (the Mega Man cast and backgrounds look great!), but he draws the Sonic cast so blandly. They looks a trifle more...gormless with their expressions and donât use their eyebrows to express themselves like any of the other artists do it. Even Ron Lim remembered to give them facial expressions!
And thatâs not the only gripe with the visuals. His colours had been relatively fine beforehand, but its in Worlds Unite where the faults in Gabriel Cassataâs colouring really start to show. Its extremely flat, and at this point I guess I should just accept that shadows are non-existent and backgrounds are only going to be simple colour gradients!
Again, I have no issues with either of the guys; I just think their work on Sonic specifically isnât their greatest.
My favourite bunch of panels in the entire issue are of Eggman and Wily suddenly appearing in the heroesâ HQ, then immediately being slammed behind bars. xD Its quick, gets the humour and message across, and it uses the mandated âvillains gotta be on-panel at the same timeâ rule to its advantage!
The next three issues are gonna be almost entirely big olâ fight scenes, but I appreciate a large majority of this one has a lot of downtime, where the heroes can actually interact with each other and allow them to be actual characters instead of fighters in a big crossover battle. Sticks adds a little bit of fun into the mix, even when sheâs interacting with the literal Plot McGuffin Xander, and in the bottom of every subsequent page thereâs the progress of Sigma and his Mechaniloid army, showing the growing threat that the good guys will soon face.
Its slow and the art is still relatively weak, but Iâll soak it alll in before the endless barrage of action panels beat up my senses. xP
Whatâs that? The powered-up Deadly Six are on the bad guysâ tail? Have no worries! Xander is here to teleport the doctors with his robo eye and take them directly to where the plot needs them! And the Deadly Six do nothing about it even though theyâre brainwashed by Sigma to be even more deadly? Smells fishy to me.

I must say, this is a damn-fine cover by Spaziante! It certainly fits as the first issue where the huge squad of heroes confront Sigmaâs army...
But looks can be deceiving.
