Thriving in this sunny front garden is the drought-tolerant Caryopteris × clandonensis 'Heavenly Blue' (bluebeard). This small upright shrub has arching branches which flowers in late summer and early autumn. The flowers are popular with pollinators.

On a recent walk I spotted a Solanum lycopersicum (tomato) plant that had somehow managed to grow from a seed between a wall and a pathway being supported by a drainpipe. Even in this manmade environment this plant has found a way to grow and was even producing fruit.

This Vitis vinifera (grape) cultivar has been trained and pruned to grow along the roof line of this row of shop fronts. The summer growth of stems and foliage has been trimmed so that the bunches of grapes can ripen in the sunshine.

At the base of this wall the clump-forming, evergreen perennial Corydalis lutea (yellow corydalis) is thriving in the shaded location. The pale green leaves form mounds of fern-like foliage with bright yellow flowers.

NOTHING TO SEE HERE! Actually with air spade work often there isn't much to visually see above ground because all the good stuff is happening underground. We were invited carry out vertical mulching on a mature oak tree on a new residential construction site in Writtle to help rejuvenate the soil and increase vigour and vitality in the tree. Once we had brush cut and raked the area beneath the tree, extending beyond the drip line where possible, we used our airspade to create a grid system of holes across the rooting zone of the tree. We inserted our air spade to decompact and fracture the underground soil prior to adding biochar into the hole and used the airspade to flush it down into the ground. These biochar ‘injections’ have been seen to improve the soil fertility, and produce some impressive results. Biochar is a form of charcoal created by heating organic material from plants and animals, to high temperatures with no oxygen. Arboricultural monitoring will be undertaken during the subsequent growing seasons.
