Everyone starts with a sh*tty first draft. Whether you’re writing a bio, essay, or book. The Sh*tty First Draft was coined by the writer Anne Lamott & refers to our first go at writing. It’s the drafts which still needs work. It’s full of plot holes, two-dimensional characters, vague sentences, clichéd platitudes, sophomoric language. During the Sh*tty First Draft: You’ll write stuff you’ll cringe at. You’ll write stuff that makes you question whether you should keep going. You’ll write stuff that lets you know that you’re not the untouchable genius you believed you were in your head. And this is normal. The sh*tty first (or second or twelfth) draft is required. You know how people say there’s no dress rehearsal for life? Or “no mud, no lotus”? Yeah, it’s like that. There’s no preparation for writing, beyond writing. & Sometimes you have to write absolute sh*t to get to your gold. There’s always room to revise and edit afterwards. This is what coaches & editors like me are for: I help writers evolve from that beautiful, sh*tty first draft into your creative vision. But the first part is on you. Take a slow breath in. The point of writing is not to get readers or followers right away. The point of writing is not to get instant awards, an agent, or lavish attention. When we focus on the number of readers, awards, attention, and agents we end up doing that start-stop-start cycle thing. We become so obsessed about recognition that we don’t hold recognition for our own work. And we stop writing. But we’re hungry, even hella desperate for validation. So we start writing. We then find it hard to create ANYTHING because we’re stuck in a tornado of pressure and perfectionism. And we stop writing. Start-stop-start. Over and over and over again. What about the point of writing was to write? What about the point was to refine your craft and get so good, so *you* that you always felt connected to your art through the ups and downs? As much as you can: focus on the writing. Forgive yourself when your attentions stray (you’re human) and bring it back to the page. I’m here to help you become a better writer off and on the page. I don’t think the Western psyche likes bodies. Hence, “I think therefore, I am.” Which like—ok, thought is totally a way to know we are human. But you know, there are other ways. First: I couldn’t think if I didn’t have a body: brain, blood, nerves, etc. And even though we’re moving to an era of artificial intelligence, there were bodies that had to exist to literally jump start this new age of thinking. I don’t think it’s either or—it’s both. Our bodies and our feelings together = 💕 Our bodies are crucial to creating and living and loving. And our thinking helps us form a story, a way of holding for it all. Whenever you write: know that your body is creating the work just as much as your beautiful thoughts. You can check in before writing: Deep breaths. Shoulder rolls. Whatever your body needs. My name is Hannah and I’m a coach and an editor. How To Brag On Personal Statements, Cover Letters, etc. without sounding like a narcissist: 1. Identify and list all the good things about you and what you do. Skills, big accomplishments, etc. 2. Be specific as possible: think numbers, reach, percentages, certificates, hours, people you studied under, etc. Make it real in the reader’s mind—they weren’t there with you. 3. Talk about what YOUR feats will do for THEM. It’s about you AND them. Stop at you and you sound like a jerk. Focus only on them and the reader learns nothing about who you are. How will your public speaking skills help your hopeful employee? How will your prowess with literary analysis make this art organization better? Get specific and name it. This tip alone will help your personal statements and the like shine.
