“What continent are we on right now?” I ask, and Red goggles at me. “Where are we on planet Earth.”

“I have no idea,” he says. 

“Well—I mean, if we’re physically here, there has to be a here to exist in, right? Like North America, or Asia.”

“Here is here,” Red says. “In The Forest.”

“But there are other people here,” I say. “Making maps, right? Figuring out what kind of land mass we’re on currently? There’s got to be someone with a—an interest in geography, or something. Or math.”

“Well, there are people who make maps, but the maps conflict with each other,” Red says. “Because of the distances changing. White Castle is directly opposite Red Castle; it takes three days to get from one castle to the other; and that’s it. Everything else is wherever you need it to be.”

“But if you walked on a beach,” I press, “eventually you’d come to a place where it stopped. Or you’d be back around where you started, or something. At least you could figure out whether this was an island or not.”

“You’d just keep going,” Red says. “Unless you decided to go somewhere non-beachy.”

For the first event, I’ve chosen The Forest at large—in all its splendor, sentience, and non-strict distances. You just walk for a while and you get to wherever you’re going. You might want to visit Red Castle (though I wouldn’t recommend it; the Red Queen is evil), or perhaps White Castle (the White King attracts cats), or somewhere in between—but be careful, because right in between, halfway, is already taken. That’s Red’s house.

“Yet your family has offered him a kindness I’m not sure is being afforded to the residents of our palace and our kingdom. If you let him slip from your fingers to kill more innocents, I will make sure—,”

“Oh cool, she’s threatening me now,” Allison had to laugh to keep her from punching her.

“I will make sure you pay for what happens to my kingdom,” She finished, scowling, fire and rage behind her eyes. “Don’t fuck with me, Bellmoore,” Lissa seethed.
