Sam Wilson was the perfect guy. Anyone who came within a ten-mile radius of him could tell. He was smart, funny, kind to strangers, loyal to his friends, and protected his family. He was well-built, in a way that Steve could never have been without the serum. He was brave, even without the powers that everyone around him had. He had a smile that could light up half of Queens, Steve was sure, and eyes that could light up the other half with ease. And Steve loved him more than anything.

The only problem was that Steve had no idea how to tell him.

            It was a marvel to Alison that even in an alien dimension with an alien language, the stars in the sky still looked the same to her. Each sparkle, shine, and glitter was like a familiar friend saying hello after decades apart. But as comforting as it was to recognize the sky above her, Alison felt a pang of homesickness, too.

            That summer should have been different for her, she thought glumly. It was supposed to be about relaxation, about getting back on her feet, about surrounding herself with people she knew and could trust. Instead, Alison had spent the better part of a week with people in her head, the curse of an alien warlock, and running through alien dimensions with Jen Walters, She-Hulk. None of it was what Alison had expected. None of it was what she had wanted.

“They look the same,” said Jen’s voice from behind her.

            At first, Alison wondered if she was only imagining the heat that had been coursing through her connection with Jen for the past two days. Maybe it really had been all in her head, so to speak. Jen Walters was a beautiful, powerful woman and Alison was spending an incredible amount of time with her. Chemistry could be natural sometimes. Inevitable, even.

            Chemistry, huh? Even telepathically, Jen was smirking. I’m flattered, princess.

            Alison shot her a sharp look. Is everything a joke to you?

            Not this. Jen pulled Alison close abruptly, before she was ready for it. You and me, Dazz, this link between us. It’s not a joke to me. It’s my first priority. Right now, it’s my only priority.

         Monica couldn’t help the small sound she made when Steve swung her into his arms. She grabbed at his shoulder, her eyes widening slightly. Something inside of her was burning hot. Really, really hot.

         “What is it?” Steve asked urgently, tensing again. “Are you hurt?”

         “No,” Monica said quickly. “No, I’m… I’m fine.”

         Steve frowned. “You made a noise.”

         “I… I know.”

         “Captain Marvel, if you’re hurt, you-”

         “No!” Monica said, loudly and quickly. “No, I’m fine. I just… I want to go home. Will you take me home?”

            It wasn’t a big surprise to Alison than Jen had anger issues. She was, after all, a Hulk. Though she didn’t always show it off, her anger simmered beneath her skin like lava under rock. It had become easier to ignore as they spent more and more time together.

            It was harder to ignore, though, when it was directed so distinctly at Alison.

            “I cannot believe you somehow made this situation worse,” Jen said the second they landed in the dimension Reed’s device had sent them to. She had once again landed on her feet, nary a hair out of place.

            Alison, meanwhile, was once again flat on her back in the grass beneath her, her eyes closed from the force of the impact. She blew her hair out of her face and held a hand out towards Jen. “Can you keep yelling after you help me up?”

           “Alison,” Ororo said patiently. “I’ve seen you buy dresses without even bothering to go inside the store. You are a much better shopper than this. And it’s not like this is your first time going to a movie premiere. What’s making you so nervous?”

             “Who said I was nervous?” Alison said defensively, stepping behind the screen to peel the dress off. She selected another one as she spoke: deep green with gold sequins along the wrists.

            “You seem nervous,” Ororo said. “And don’t deny it.”

            Alison didn’t even bother pulling the dress all the way up her hips. She already hated the way the fabric felt against her sensitive skin. “Fine. I’m nervous.”

            “I’m shocked.”

            “Are goddesses supposed to be this sarcastic?”

            “This one is.”
