5-2026 artist/writer commentary
April's posts covering the artist and writer Patreon commentary for the March 2026 pages of Homestuck^2 Beyond Canon are up, skimming over my reactions to parts of it under the cut. (Very abridged, please support the Homestuck Patreon to see the whole thing early!) Though before I get into it, I want to do a bit of extra Liveblogging and use this opportunity to relay a few things other people have pointed out to me about recent upd8's, like the shipteasing I'd missed between Jake and Karkat in the previous upd8 in particular...
Alright, Aspen! Here is the first of possibly many (definitely more than one) Viking!Steve asks inspired by my vacation through the land of the Vikings.
I've learned that Viking women had the right to get a divorce. Do you think our poor reader ever contemplated it? And what would Steve do to stop it???
Kris, I'm so envious of your chance to go on an adventure/vacation in the viking lands! I think I am yearning to/want to put that on the list of trips I want to take in the next five years...
I've thought through this quite a bit, since you left it last week, and I'm confident now that the answer is no.
While our viking warrior King Steven has been brutal and rough, and enacted prima nocta/raped the reader the first night, then made the trade for her life to spare her village in perpetuity, and forced her to marry him... He has never been and will never be violent to her. Really once he takes her out of the room with her first husband, I think the horror ebbs.
During the first few weeks when she's vacillating on the scale of frightened to wary of him, she wouldn't consider trying to divorce or run away out of duty to her family that remains behind in her old village, and her actual friends, even if she it bitter about being traded away so easily. But even that bitterness is really only at how little she was valued as the wife for the magnate's son. I think it dashed her hopes as the fresh-faced bride, seen as the one worthy/best-suited to marry the man who would be the next magnate. She was forsaken so quickly. AND YET also understands that trading away one woman for the safety and protection of an entire village is not something easily refused.
But in maybe the space of time after that when she still feels out of place, is trying to learn how to be the queen, doesn't feel at home, divorce would still feel like .... to what end? She's going to divorce the king? And go where? Who's going to take her in? Who's going to not treat her like some kind of pariah? She has no means of her own to get on a ship and leave, and who would take her? Even with the king's 'blessing' or agreement to a divorce, I'm not sure many would be willing to go out of their way to potentially risk even a slight disfavor from the king. Steven's people revere him because he is a very good king to them. He rules them justly and protects them. He provides for them, makes sure their economy is thriving, and holds celebrations for his people for holidays and important occasions.
And then she begins to see all these things, too.
She is married to a good king.
Hi there! š
Firstly, congratulations on 9 years on Tumblr!!!
My I request a Writer's Commentary for Welcome to Hellfire, please?
(It's one I frequently think about when I need a little chuckle because I love how that's Lucy and Eddie's first official conversation. The two Whats get me every time!!)
Welcome to Hellfire
Oh wow, lot to talk about with this one.
(Also, sorry I'm so late with this. I've been going through my own personal hell at work the last few weeks.)
After all these years, I'm still pretty proud of it in terms of characterization. Eddie is a deceptively difficult character to write, particularly when it comes to meeting new people. I still have trouble with him at times, but from people's responses, I must have done something right.
If I could go back, there are a few things I would change. I wrote this before a started developing Lucy along side Stacy (@goshilovehappiness OC). I'd add more internal dialogue from Eddie's POV about their relationship. I don't think it would change anything in particular about he and Lucy's first meeting, but he'd have even more reservations about trusting her. He and Stacy had a very messy break up and her friend (maybe?) coming up to him asking about Hellfire would raise his hackles a bit more.
If and when I get to writing her first session, I would put a bit more emphasis on that past relationship and how the rest of Hellfire would react upon hearing Lucy joining.
Also, if I could go back, I'd clean up a lot of the DnD stuff since I've played way more since then.
As for Lucy herself, I do think this is one of my better fics for her characterization. It's a solid representation of where she is post season 1 leading into season 2. (Some day I am going to get to writing her inclusion in all the season.)
I was really touched by some of the comments I got on first publishing this and how people related to her. Lucy, for me, is somebody who in constantly on the boarder between the in group and the out group, making it easy for her to slip through the cracks. I think it's a feeling a lot of people feel at that age, so having an excuse to explore it in Lucy is really fun for me.
I know OCs are a tough sell for people, but I do think this holds pretty firm as an argument for giving them a shot.
Also, I'll say it, I'm a damn funny writer when I put my mind to it!
Personal favorite passages for me:
Lucy heard all of them and could only bring herself to believe a handful. She didnāt care what anyone said, no way in hell he had actually bitten a kidās whole ear off.
********
āConvenient,ā he said, smiling sardonically. āClearly youāre new to this so listen up buttercup.ā He took a step closer, making a point to lean down to her eye level. āI donāt do freebies.ā
āIām sorry?ā she asked, unsure where this conversation was going.Ā
He ignored her. āBring twenty bucks tomorrow. I doubt youāll need more than that.āĀ
āFor what? Like a membership fee?ā
āāā
(take that as an enthusiastic PICK YOUR FAVE or tell me three LOL)
Hooray!!! Thank you jen!
I think I'll give you an easter egg from The Graveyard Smash that nobodys noticed yet! Its very subtle, but I put Chrissy in a red dress very much on purpose, because who else do we know that wears a red dress?
Almost like it was fated or something š

For the fanfic directorās cutāāBack Against the Wallā? Any part of it you want :)
Starry Talks Fics:Ā Ā Back Against the Wall
I lucked out, with this one, and I hope nobody thinks me arrogant for believing thereās a reasonĀ that this is my most successful star wars work. (so far, anyway)
With this being for the secret santa 2k19, I got some prompts for it, and what my Giftee asked for just so happened to fall in line with some ideas I had + things I just generally enjoy writing. Luke, dad, forced to interact, being awkward and stubborn and actually talkingĀ ?? Yeah I canāt get enough of that either. So that worked out real well.
One of my challenges was finding a somewhat unique way of bringing this about while still keeping things IC, though. Eventually I realized that having them do things that are reckless and could possibly work in theoryĀ but arenāt entirely well thought made the most sense.
Luke, being self-sacrificing, is obviously gonna be the last person to leave this mission no matter how risky, and hold himself hostage when the opportunity arrives. Vader just wants his son however possible, and while he takes a more gentle approach here than at Bespin, heās still. Well. Vader. So like, it became about finding a way to show heās learned from that experience, while still keeping it so itās clear heās serving his best interests first. I had to show that comparatively tactful doesnāt mean objectivelyĀ tactful, and it was fun to play with his Emotions while still having him be the Bad Dad we know and love. āThe road to Hell is paved with good intentionsā more or less sums up Vaderās actions towards his children, in my mind, and his children have inherited that to varying degrees (which lends its way to fascinating nature vs nurture explorations, but thatās a topic for another day.)
I really loved diving into the way they both, ultimately, wantĀ the same thing but have entirely different ways of going about it and are SO stubborn in their methods. Truly, the fact that both father and son are powerful disasters makes them so fun to write. And if we wanna get into a specific point or two in this one, I think Vader awkwardly saying so little but assuaging so manyĀ of Lukeās doubts is something Iām really proud of. The two bits of dialogue Iām thinking of are his comment on Lukeās piloting and assuring him that he was wanted.
The thing is, thereās a TON of complicated Stuff between these two. Luke fears Vader but idolizes his dad. Vader really wants his family, but he wants it his way.Ā Theyāve both held these beliefs for over 20 years and reconciling their Idealized Reality with the actualĀ world around them is a process that NEITHER of them is prepared for. Thatās really what I wanted to capture with this one, and truly I hope that it did.Ā
I'd love a commentary about this passage in chapter 2: "This isn't about balance. It's simpler, more, well, basic. It's about focus. It's more immediate, and not as complicated, but it's pretty powerful. When all you're focused on is breathing, when you center your mind, everything around you changes. You can hear your own heart beating. You can feel the world around you sharper and clearer than you've ever felt before." (the passage is longer but tumblr asks don't have enough space, sorry!)
That was rather goofy of the ask, wasnāt it?Ā āPaste 500 words ...,ā but you canāt. So. I picked the ~500 words that start with this part. And Iām really glad you picked this one, because in my head, thereās a whole lot going on here.Ā
Danielsmiled and let his arms fall to his sides. "This isn't aboutbalance. It's simpler, more, well, basic. It's about focus. It's moreimmediate, and not as complicated, but it's pretty powerful. When allyou're focused on is breathing, when you center your mind, everythingaround you changes. You can hear your own heart beating. You can feelthe world around you sharper and clearer than you've ever feltbefore. It clears your mind, but it also puts you in touch with it ina way I can't really explain. Before long, you realize everythingthat's bothering you, or distracting you, or confusing you, isstarting to make sense. You can take your life back when you feellike it's gotten out of your control." He motioned for Robby tomove closer. "Come on. You try it. You'll see."
In the movies, Mr. Miyagi taught Daniel things in a very specific way and a very specific order. Basic blocks first, then kicks, then punches. Then breathing. Then, once he had all of those mastered, he put them together in the kata.
Iāve never understood why Daniel changed that order for Robby. And itās always bothered me that the breathing exercise, something that was so integral in his training and such a huge visual reference to Daniel and Mr. Miyagi that it came back in KKIII and the gorgeous training montage ended with them doing it behind the tree, with the sun setting behind them, hasnāt been seen in the series at all.Ā Itās a huge part of what Mr. Miyagi taught him. Itās definitely something heād want Robby to know. So I wanted him to teach it to him.Ā
Robbyslipped his sling off and let it hang at his side. He stood, facingDaniel, and pressed his hands together. Daniel closed his eyes againand concentrated, felt each breath moving in and out of his lungs, and let his arms move without conscious thought. Even after all thoseyears without it, the movements were still comfortable and familiar. He knew Robby was watching him, just as he remembered watching Mr.Miyagi the first time. He could feel him studying Daniel's movements, comparing them to his own, making the adjustments he needed tocompensate for not being able to fully extend his shoulder. Danielknew the moment everything clicked into place, and he turned histhoughts inward when he heard Robby's breathing slow down and evenout.
This is simply a callback to KKII, to Daniel in that goofy powder blue tuxedo, learning how to breathe.
Danielwent deeper into his own mind and let go of the anger, frustration, and anxiety he'd allowed to take hold of him that morning. He couldhear the wind blowing through the leaves around them, the squirrelschattering and the birds chirping. A wave of relaxation crashed intohim, and he let it pull him under. The mountain and the lake appearedin perfect clarity in his mind's eye, and as his focus sharpened, sodid the vision.
Thereās a little bit of minor foreshadowing in this one (for something that hasnāt been posted yet), but at this point, itās mostly meant to show how quickly Danielās reacquired some of his skills. Physically, I think he might still be a bit rusty, but I have this headcanon that one thing he does do, and does very well, is control his mind.Ā
Not so much with his PTSD, because thatās probably not something he can just will himself out of without help, but just in general. I think he can focus his mind to the point that he can make his body do things it shouldnāt be able to do - like an extremeĀ āmind over matterā thing.Ā
I think Mr. Miyagi taught him how to do it. Not at all supernatural, and he doesnāt have any strangeĀ āpowersā or anything. He just has an incredibly powerful mind, and he knows how to use it.Ā
Then, suddenly, he became aware that somewhere close to them, somethingfelt wrong. There was an empty place in the trees, with no movementand no sound. He concentrated on it, listening, breathing, and thathole in the birdsong began to change. It got darker, heavier.Scarier. Something was there, something that didn't belong. He tippedhis head and tried to pinpoint exactly where and what it was.
This is ridiculously heavy-handed foreshadowing. But, again, itās about him being so focused, and his mind being so in-tune with the world around him, that he can literally feel when itās wrong.
Hekept breathing, feeling his hands move, listening to his own exhalesin concert with Robby's, and the evenness of the sound told him Robbyhadn't felt it. He tried to pull back into his mind, reached for thepeace he'd been so close to finding, but the hair on the back of hisneck was standing up again. Something ā someone ā was staring atthe middle of his back. He could feel it like a physical touch. Heshook his head and kept going, tried to ignore it and stay focused, but the wrongnessof it only got stronger.
More heavy-handed foreshadowing. Thereās something or someone in the woods. I made it look like it was Johnny, of course, but it wasnāt. Which no one (hopefully) figured out until Mike actually appeared.Ā
Thank you for this! This is probably one of my favorite scenes in the first four chapters.Ā
