hello anon, thank you so much for the support!

i first discovered my love for writing in middle school, along the same time i originally joined tumblr, wattpad, and perused a03. i discovered that while i was pretty decent at writing academic papers, i really excelled and had an interest in creative writing. where there's no bounds and guidelines as to what you can do. i wrote mainly for myself, and i think that's where a lot of people start out. it can be scary sharing your creation with the world!

as for writing tips, i keep a journal of my requests and personal ideas so i can keep track and remember little details that i might wanna add. i think i'll post my request schedule pretty soon, too! for me, sometimes i have ideas that i want to put together but lack the motivation to do so. i just write regardless, even if it starts small. the small work gives a frame to the bigger picture that i can always come back to.

another tip is reading anything and everything. fiction, nonfiction. history, poetry, biographies. anything to expand your scope, introduce new themes, and expand your vocabulary!

But there’s more to life than that sly smile. Can’t say I miss what’s been gone for a while. Mind of a child. It's my heart that's wild.

And you just couldn't understand, shrouded perspective not how you'd planned that I could love you and not be controlled by your hand.

i’ve got this character who’s aloof, rude, secretive, quick-to-violence, blunt and overall mysterious and troubled.

my problem is, as much as i love him, i have no idea how i’d actually *write* him. i’m the exact opposite, i’m an optimist extrovert that wears his heart on his sleeve. while i can write characters that aren’t like me, he’s so radically different that i feel stuck. i don’t want him to be the stereotypical ~mysterious bad boy lone wolf~, but i don’t know what else to do! the only thing we’be both got in common is that we can be mean and snarky, but we’re mean and snarky in different ways.

it feels like no matter what i do, he ends up being flat, because of the whole “closed-off and secretive” thing. any advice?

It can be pretty touch to get into character when the character is so radically different from yourself. However, I’ve found a trick that has quite frankly, saved me as a writer.

When I was a total writing noob, my characters used to have no personality because I had yet to discover this secret hack… and really it’s simple. All you need to do is think of a fictional character (or maybe even somebody you know in real life) who has a similar personality to your character. If you don’t already, really get to know them better. Take notes on how this person/character reacts to different situations. Then when you’re writing your character, ask yourself “what would (others character/persons name) do?” If you’re afraid that it will look like you’re copying someone else’s character, trust me, it won’t. There are soooo many characters and people out there- nobody will ever connect the dots. You’re not actually copy and pasting somebody else character into your book, because you make it unique along the way.
