Why my friend, specifically? When I was doing the design work for the locations, I was complaining to him about having trouble naming things. I'm fine on the more scientific/technical side but that tends to create some samey-sounding locations. He helped me with quite a few of these names, including this very gross sounding one, which I love!

In Mitresk families are the core of everything. The average Mitreskian family consists of the parents and at least four children plus either one set of grandparents or aunts or uncles who aren’t married yet. The children often stay with their parents until they marry or have to move to a different city because of their job. Therefore, the majority of buildings are simple two-story houses or three-story houses for the more wealthy families. It is common for children to share their rooms by age and not by gender which means the first and the second child share a room, the third and fourth share one, and so on. Co-Sleeping is done until the child is at least three, sometimes even longer if there isn’t a younger sibling. Breakfast is the biggest event of the day since the family will be away to school, work or other duties for the rest of the day and will eat the other meals with friends and coworkers usually. The singles working away from home met with friends and other single coworkers for breakfast at the restaurants that open early only for breakfast and will close for another three hours until lunch to clean and prepare. Married couples without children often join these groups of friends as well since it would be only the two of them. Children are often taken care of either by grandparents or aunts and uncles who have small children. This leads to some sort of family-run daycare where the people who take care of the children change every few years, so everyone has to watch out for the little ones for a while. At the age of four, the children start curiosity classes which are basically kindergarten classes where they can play and learn under the watch of teachers. It is not mandatory and mostly used by parents in the big cities with only little family around. At age six children start school the week following the Lover’s Day in August. It is celebrated by gifting the children their first own books to encourage them to read and learn. School is all day and starts at ten am and lasts until six pm with an hour-long lunch break and a snack break around four pm. Ten years of school are mandatory and during this, they will learn everything they need including sex ed. Following these years of school, they get two years of discovering themselves which means they can take internships, travel, learn things that weren’t part of the curriculum or dive into arts. Around age ten those who will have magic start to show the mark of magic somewhere on their upper body. Sometimes it doesn’t appear until age twelve but never after the sixteenth birthday. Mages start the magic academy usually at age eighteen because the body needs time to get used to the magic that flows inside and learning to control it for sure needs a lot of self-control.  Since only about 40% of the humans have magic it became a standard that no teenager will start apprenticeship before the age of eighteen because it’s the age mages start the academy. Where the non-magic person will learn their trade for something between three and five years those with magic will undergo basic studies for three years following another three years of specialized training depending on their trade. Every kind of job is learned by mages and non-mages so it is pretty mixed up. Where there are some things that require a mage of about 90% of the things that can be done without magic. Disabled people usually are part of the society and learn among the able-bodied. Everyone can find a job they can do even with the disability and when things get worse that they can’t fulfill the workload they simply work less. Sadly some city-states went away from this mindset and limited the jobs disabled are allowed to do. To keep the balance between family and work is important so you will barely find someone work overtime and the daily working hours are usually around seven to eight hours including a lunch break. If someone gets sick they can simply see a healer at a hospital since they are funded by the city-states. The people only will need to pay for treatment if it is something that needs a lot of working hours like a complicated surgery but it is only 2% of the sick person’s monthly income maximum. The average Mitreskian gets married somewhere in their twenties. The one who pops the question gets a nicely engraved bracelet for their partner and themselves. There are special patterns reserved for these bracelets to tell them apart from the common ones. Besides this, the classic gifts are scarfs, chains with key pendants, anything that is a shade of red and often useful things like gloves, shawls etc., basically anything that has a connection to them. After the engagement became official the closest female relative of the woman will gather to help plan and prepare everything with the bride to be. If it is a lesbian or gay couple only the sisters or female cousins will join forces for the wedding. A lot of people get married around the winter light's festival which is at winter solstice because the promise of the longer nights is seen as a good omen for marriage. The week before the wedding the couple gets separated by their relatives and won’t see each other until the moment they step in front of the city council since there are no priests in Mitresk. A wedding is a big thing since family is everything in the Mitreskian society and marriage combines two families to a new one. The celebrations last three days at last and every relative and friend will get invited. Big wedding gifts don’t exist but the guests are asked to bring something for the newlywed that makes them remember that day. It can be everything from some self-made photo collages, wooden decorative items or even some baby clothes to bring luck for a fast pregnancy/adoption. There is no honeymoon but the newlywed isn’t expected anywhere for the next ten days to give them time to settle into the life together and decorate their home. It is expected to have children fast and women who won’t have their first child within the first five years of marriage are frowned upon. Infertile women even caught it worse since it is often a cause for divorce or being seen as “un-marriable”. Talking about women, they sometimes have a bad fate. The majority of city-states still prohibit women to carry weapons, learn sword fight, and take over the family’s trading business. These things are still seen as something women can’t do and often ends in the families having to pay a fine if they go against it. Some city-states slowly get rid of these outdated laws but it takes time especially when the council of the cities consist of a mix of dragons and humans which often lead to “Why change what worked for centuries?” kind of mindset.

And yet the SilMil has a political and magi-technical chokehold on the region somehow and it severely pisses her off
