World Time Attack Challenge & Show N' Shine 2017

The week leading up to World Time Attack 2017 was an experience to say the least. Here is what I captured before the event and during the Friday and Saturday of the event itself. This is one of my biggest aftermovies I have produced, I hope you all enjoy it as much as I loved producing it....

1. BODY 

(a) Alternative materials are permitted for the Front Bar, Bonnet, Side Skirts, Rear Bar and Boot provided they follow the same shape as the OEM part.

(e) OEM fenders must be of original material however flare extensions are permitted to cover the control tyre.

these rules stipulate that the panels must follow the same shape and the OEM part, which implies that they are referring to the the exterior shape, not the internal shape. the catch in particular is the phrase “alternative material”

17. DEFINITIONS 

(a) Alternative Materials - Materials of suitable and acceptable strength and construction for use in motor vehicle parts and panels.

what i propose is to create a very loose mesh using carbonfibre stringers or steel tubing in the shape of the OEM bumper, though with 90% of the area it covers being open. this would then be covered in a fine plastic mesh to achieve the shape of the bodywork. the benefit of this is that it essentially reduces the drag from the OEM bodywork. alternatively, you could construct a series of aluminium louvres approximately 5mm apart that are secured together, following the shape of the OEM bumper. this method would be preferable though more complex and expensive.

the next phase is then to build the performance aerodynamics underneath the mesh, allowing it to function with more downforce than is previously possible in the class. this would include the construction of a rear diffuser and opening up of the rear wheel wells [among other possible things].
