Josh's Wish
The bell above the café door chimed softly.
It was barely seven in the morning.
Outside, Wolf Peak was just waking up, the streets still painted in shades of blue-gray dawn. Inside, the scent of fresh coffee and cinnamon filled the air as Nico polished a ceramic mug behind the counter.
His first customer of the day looked exhausted. Today he'd try having a real name, connect with the customers better. Call him Nico.
The young man shuffled through the doorway carrying a backpack that seemed heavier than it should have been. Dark circles hung beneath his eyes, his hair was a mess, and his university hoodie looked like it had survived several sleepless nights.
Nico could practically smell the stress radiating off him.
"Morning," Nico said with an easy smile.
The student blinked.
"Uh... morning."
"What can I get started for you?"
The young man glanced at the menu before laughing humorlessly.
"The strongest thing you've got."
Nico chuckled.
"Coffee I can do. Miracles cost extra."
The student actually smiled at that.
"Fair enough."
As Nico began preparing the drink, he nodded toward an empty stool.
"Take a seat."
The student hesitated before sitting.
"Nico?" he asked.
"That's what people call me."
"I'm Josh."
"Nice to meet you, Josh."
For a few moments there was only the sound of grinding beans and steaming milk.
Then Nico asked the question he always asked.
"So what's weighing on your mind?"
Josh laughed again.
"Everything."
"That's a big order."
The answer came easier than Josh expected.
Maybe it was the atmosphere.
Maybe it was exhaustion.
Maybe it was something else.
"I'm just tired."
Nico listened.
Not pretending to listen.
Actually listening.
"I'm working two jobs while going to school full time," Josh continued. "Every day feels the same. Wake up. Study. Work. Sleep for four hours. Repeat."
Nico nodded.
"Sounds difficult."
"It is."
Josh stared at the counter.
"And honestly? Sometimes I look online and wonder why I bother."
Nico raised an eyebrow.
"Oh?"
"All these influencers and celebrities. Models. Athletes. Musicians."
He laughed at himself.
"Stupid, right?"
"Not necessarily."
Josh sighed.
"I just wish I had one of those lives."
Nico stirred the espresso slowly.
"What kind of life?"
"You know..."
Josh gestured vaguely.
"The body. The confidence. The popularity."
He shook his head.
"The kind of life where people actually notice you when you walk into a room."
The café grew strangely quiet.
Nico's expression didn't change.
"And if you had all that?"
Josh considered the question.
"I think I'd finally be happy."
Nico said nothing.
Few wishes were ever that simple.
Still, he finished the drink and slid the mug across the counter.
The foam on top carried an unusual pattern.
A crown.
A spotlight.
An eye.
Though Josh didn't consciously notice any of them.
"On the house," Nico said.
Josh blinked.
"Seriously?"
"The first customer of the day gets lucky."
"Thanks."
Nico smiled.
"Careful what you wish for."
Josh laughed.
"Trust me. Nothing ever goes my way."
He grabbed his coffee, waved goodbye, and headed out the door.
The bell chimed once.
Then silence returned.
Nico watched through the window as the student disappeared down the street.
A knowing smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.
"The interesting ones never realize they've made a wish."
Josh didn't notice anything unusual for the rest of the day.
He attended classes.
Worked an evening shift.
Dragged himself home to his tiny apartment.
Collapsed onto his bed.
And fell asleep almost immediately.
Outside, clouds drifted across the moon.
Deep beneath Wolf Peak, ancient magic stirred.
Not explosive magic.
Not dramatic magic.
The subtle kind.
The dangerous kind.
The kind that rewrote pathways rather than breaking them.
As Josh slept, dreams filled his mind.
Crowds cheering.
Camera flashes.
Magazine covers.
Millions of followers.
Admiration.
Attention.
Fame.
His sleeping body shifted slightly beneath the blankets.
His wish had not been ignored.
It had been heard.
And somewhere in The Last Wish Café, Nico was already preparing tomorrow's coffee, curious to see what shape Josh's new future would take.
After all, wishes never changed only one thing.
They changed everything connected to it.
