Well. Here we are. Last day. I am sitting here counting the hours, everything packed waiting for an appropriate time to go to bed.
The last days were mostly about getting things done, getting rid of excess clothes (or stuff that I didnât deem necessary to take with me), cleaning the car, washing clothes, getting a box for the bike and so on. I managed to squeeze a hike in on saturday which was nice, went to Mt. Oxford, the closest accessible peak, about 60km west of Christchurch. Oh and I went to another meditation class on thursday evening which was pretty nice (liked it more than the one on tuesday) at the local Sri Chimnoy center (he was a spiritual teacher from India, not specifically buddhist but an advocate of meditation) and just to balance it out lots of sitting around, waiting and doom scrolling.
Bit more about the hike. Well. Sorta. After I had arrived as I was getting ready there was a sudden shout (I parked next to a fence) or maybe roar coming from the other side of the fence and then some of the loudest and rudest shouting Iâve ever heard. A 50+ guy came around screaming and shouting at his son and his sonâs dog. From what I gathered the dog chased the chickens away which, made really clear by the dad, were their livelyhood. He was threatening the kid that heâd shoot the dog the next time it goes after the chicken and when the mum came around to defend the son (who actually brought back the lost chickens) the dad screamed at her as well in a manner that I am not willing to share that. I truly felt for all of them, the dad has clearly had some anger management issues and while I of course donât know the whole story I feel like there cannot be a reason to treat your wife and son in such a wayâŚGotta admit I was a bit scared too, tried to be invisible while putting on boots and stuff, felt like the guy could bring out a gun and shoot whoever is in his wayâŚWas thinking about this half the time while going up the mountain..
The hike itself was nothing special, it was just nice to be outside after being stuck inside due to the rain the days before. If anything it felt really long cause the trail wasnât steep but long and I canât seem to find a good pace on these mellower climbs, I go super fast until I exhaust myself sooner than I should. It was a 7 km, 1000m vertical climb, for your information the ones are prefer are more like 3 maybe 4 km long 1000 vertical which means they are way steeper and I guess due to experience I can find the right pace for those way easier. The lover part of the forest was damaged by a forest fire but this timer around the whole forest was super wet which made things interesting, lots of big mud spots but at the same time burned trees around, the whole forest had an odd smell. Anyway, I made it up in 2 hours and 15ish min, the view was kinda cool, the whole Christchurch area was covered in clouds while I was above them, but also below another layer of clouds so it wasnât actually sunny. To the west I could actually see (near Castle Hill) one of the access roads on the mountain side that Iâve climbed by bike the week before. This trail was supposedly a biking trail as well and a few weeks ago I even thought about trying it but I am glad I didnât, maybe 40% would have been rideable and maybe 10% of that enjoyable..
It was one of those hikes where I was just happy to be outside and exercise a bit, knowing that I wonât have the chance to do it for a few days now.
Skipping ahead, yesterday I checked in at the last hostel, (the previous one had 8 bed rooms, this one has 4, and a bit more space for storing the bikebox), disassambled and packed the bike, cleaned the car, did laundry etc.
Today I returned the car to the previous owner as I wasnât able to sell it and got a glorious 500 NZD for it (he actually gave me USD, maybe thatâs easier to exchange to CAD in Canada than NZD..)..Which means that if I basically rented a car for 3 months at a daily rate of 38 NZD. A normal car costs about 80 per day and any decent campervan costs around 100 or more so Iâd say that was still a pretty good deal, at least I had the chance to get some of the money back even if in the end I couldnât actually sell it for what the car is worth. The guy (Anthony) was really nice, we had some great chats, saw his backyard and considering that he is trying to get out of the campervan business (after being in it for 25 years) he still got 15 or so cars haha. He said this was one of the worst seasons in terms of business (also a really mild summer apparently) so I am trying to come to terms with how things turned out. With finishing the trip in Christchurch and returning the car to him it definitely feels like full circle in a somewhat âpoeticâ way and I like that. In the afternoon I went for a walk in Christchurch cause I actually wanted to come back here for a week to walk around in the city more but the weather had other plans. Saw some nice street art so here is some of it.
Was kinda walking around to buy a cap as well since I lost mine sometime in the last 3 weeks but in the end I managed to not spend an ungodly amount of money on an overpriced cap. Maybe in Canada. That reminds me I also lost my wrist brace (back in february) and half of my riding gloves, the wind blew it out of my lap. Maybe I already mentioned that though.
I am really just throwing stuff out there but I just wanna express that I am glad that I booked this hostel for the past two nights, while the previous place was a bit more modern it almost felt like a backpacker factory, dozens of people coming and going every day, it is clearly just a business while here I the owner is at the reception and was really cool about washing my bike and storing it and so on.
I booked a taxi for tomorrow, I am bit nervous whether the bikebox will fit, (although it did fit in the taxi when I landed) and I even mentioned it in the booking that I have a box so it should be fine but I canât help but to be nervous about it.
Another thing to be nervous about is the rideshare in Canada, itâs a private person doing that and he wants me to send him a deposit but I donât have the canadian online banking stuff that he has and he doesnât have revolut so I told him to give me his IBAN and iâd send him the deposit there, havenât got a response to that so I am hoping he wonât change his mind now..
Another random bit, while walking home from the meditation class on thursday I passed by the hostel that is officially my home address (as I needed that to buy the car, itâs the hostel of Anthony) to check if I got any speeding tickets and I am happy to say that I only got one, apparently while in Wellington they caught me driving at 57 km/h while the max allowed speed was 50 km/h. Itâs only 30 bucks but as I got it confirmed by Anthony (again) today, since they didnât hand it to me the ticket personally it doesnât count as an official handover so I donât really have to pay it cause if I donât and they come looking for me at my home address (which is a hostel) the owner can just tell them âi have no idea where he is, this is a hostelâ âŚFunny that they havenât found a way around to prevent this yetâŚOh well.
So tomorrow the taxi picks me up at 3:10 AM and the flight to Brisbane is at 6:05 AM.
Landing in Brisbane at 8:00 (or something like that) and the next flight is at 10:15 AM, landing in Vancouver at 6:55 AM. Itâs a 19 hour travel (the flying part), which feels short after the 40+ hours that it took to get here.
This is probably the last post here, starting a new one for Canada, here is the link to that. - https://www.tumblr.com/canadamozsombi
I am actually not sure what I am more excited about the 2nd season of my favorite star wars season airing tomorrow or going to Canada..
Obligatory song recommendation:
This song (and the memes around it) is the style for the canadian blog so it seemed fitting to finish this one with it.
