Common sense stuff here but trust me it’s hard to think straight if this happens to you. Happened to me in New Hampshire about 3 years ago and you go from zero to balls-out panic instantly. The magnitude of the cold and the shock just sucks all rational thinking right out of you.
A Home-Made Compass
If you happen to have a magnet, it is easy to make a compass. Rub a fine needle on the magnet; then on the side of your nose. Then lay it gently on the surface of a cup full of water. The needle well float and point north. The cup must not be of metal.

OREGON SHELTER is fine for deep-snow country because of the steep pitch of its sides. The roofing shown here is of split shakes but any kind can be used if roofing boards are employed. The fireplace is a double-ender - one side facing cabin for heating purposes, the opposite to be used when it is time for cooking.
