âexcuse meâhave you seen my daughter?!âÂ
your mother stops and tugs at a boyâs sleeve, her fingers curling tightly around the fabric as sheâs afraid that he might disregard her like the othersâthinking sheâs crazy, with her messed up hair, tired face, and⌠raggedy old-fashioned outfit.
he startles, blinking down at her, and for a moment, she thinks he might ignore her like the rest. instead, he removes his earbuds.Â
the city is like thatâindifferent, moving at a pace too fast for a motherâs grief.Â
she fumbles in her bag when she realises that heâs staying, panickingâtrying not to waste too much of the young boyâs time and attentionâpulling out a creased photograph. itâs a not-so-formal picture of you. a picture you took when you had to apply for your universityâs application. itâs not really recent nor is it old, maybe a year or two younger. your hair was shorter then, eyes clearer, brighter smile. excited to be studying in the city.
the way your motherâs fingers shake as she holds it up makes it seem fragile, like the image itself might go missing too if she doesnât hold it onto her dear life.Â
âplease,â she says, her voice wavering. âthis is my daughterâyn, sheâs been missing for days and she was last seen near here,â your mother continues, pointing at the place you were last seenâa japanese restaurant just tucked between the alley.Â
âshe was wearing, uhââ she swallows her panic, âa white blouse, a blue skirt, and, and she has a pink scarf wrapped around her neck. sheâshe has a birthmark here, just under her jaw.â your mother tilts her head up and taps her finger at where you have your birthmark. she gives more major detailsâyour hair colour, eyes colour, specific features that you have.Â
âhave you seen her?â
the boy looks at your pictureâthen at your mother. thereâs something unreadable flickering across his face. a flicker of recognition? pity? amusement? but it smooths over so quickly, she thinks she must have imagined it.Â
âis she around this height?â he asks, moving his hand midair, just below his shoulder.Â
your motherâs eyes flicker to the gesture, her breath hitching as she nods eagerly. âyes! about that tallâmaybe a little shorter if she wasnât wearing heels!â thereâs a desperation in her voice, something fragile and clinging.
the boy hums, tilting his head as if trying to recall something just out of his reach. his gaze flickers back to the photograph. then, he reaches out his hand. âcan i see it?âÂ
your mother hesitates, her fingers tightening around the edges of the picture.Â
itâs a motherâs instinctâa motherâs reluctance to let go of her daughter on a piece of paper even for a moment. but she exhales, shakily, and places it in his waiting palm.Â
he takes it carefully, as if heâs handling something delicate. his thumb brushes over the image, over your cheek, your hair like heâs tucking it, pressing his thumb faintly on your lips on the creased paper before smoothing over the fine lines of your face. his eyes linger, he tugs on his bottom lipâsuppressing a smile.
âyeahâŚâ he murmurs, almost to himself. he glances up to your mother. âshe does look familiar.â
your motherâs breath catchesâshe swears she couldâve passed out right there and then. âyouâve seen her?âÂ
he nods, slow and deliberate. his brows knitting together in careful thought. âi think so. a few nights ago. near that bus stop.â he says, pointing at a bus stop. your mother immediately follows his index, looking at the worn out, obviously unmaintained bus stop. the cctv hangs on its last wire, broken.Â
his eyes remain on her.
your mother turns to look at him, gasping. âthe station? was she alone? was she okay? did you talk to her?â
he hesitates, just for a second before pursing his lips and offering her a small, almost apologetic smile. âah⌠i donât really know. it was dark. but i remember the pink scarf, and blue skirt. sheâs a cute girl, rightâŚ?â he asks, arching an eyebrow as he looks down to your mother.Â
he studies the way her lips part slightly, her eyes widen at the mention of the odd comment. yeah, youâve been told youâre adorable beforeâŚÂ
stuttering, she nods. âyesâyes⌠she is.â she barely hears herself over the pounding in her ears. she taps on the photograph heâs holding. âyou really saw her?âÂ
âi did talk to her,â he hums, rubbing the back of his neck. his voice casual and effortless.âshe asked to borrow my phone to call someone⌠then, she asked if i could drop her off somewhere,âÂ
your mother stills. the air around her seems to thin. âsheâshe asked you to drop her off? whereâ?â she can hear her own heartbeat drumming in her ears.Â
he nods. âyeah⌠she looked so nervous. she kept looking around like someone was following her.â his lips press together for a moment, then he glances at your photograph again, feigning thoughtfulness. âbut she was so polite. really soft-spoken. really soft,âÂ
your motherâs finger twitches, sheâs about to take back the picture from his hand when he lets out a soft hum, narrowing his eyes and tilting his head like heâs recalling what happened that night. her hand falls down to her side.
âdid she say where she was going?âÂ
the boy exhales, shifting his weight from one foot to the other. âno,â he shakes his head, looking at her with pity in his eyes. âshe just asked me if i could take her back to her friendâs house.âÂ
her throat tightens. âwhy didnât you drop her off at the police station?âÂ
for the second time, something flickers across his face. itâs quickâalmost imperceptible. a crack in the kindness, but itâs gone before she can confirm it.
he lets out a small chuckle, almost embarrassed. âi asked her the same thing,â his thumb caresses your cheek in the photograph absentmindedly. your mother doesnât notice it. âshe was in panic and said she didnât want to go there. said she was scared.â
your motherâs stomach twists. her breathing uneven but she tries to keep it under radar. he notices. âscared? scared like whatâlike how?â
âmmhm,â his voice dips, quieter like heâs letting her in on something secret. âshe told me she got into some troubleâfinancially. people were looking for her. i thought maybe it was, like a⌠loan shark thing.â he glances at your mother, watching, waiting.Â
her breath catches, and sheâs quick to deny. âno, thatâs notââ she stops herself, pressing a hand to her chest. the words feel wrong, so foreign, you would have told herâyou would have told her if youâre short on money. you wouldnâtâno, you really wouldnât borrow someone elseâs.Â
yes, your family is poorâyour siblings donât even have the privilege to pursue education butâ
the boy tilts his head slightly, humming thoughtfully. âthatâs what she told me,â he murmurs, almost apologetically. âthis girl⌠yeahâshe seemed really on edge. she kept looking over at my carâs door handle and the side mirrors.â
âwhat?âÂ
he shifts his weight like he doesnât quite know how to put it in words. âi donât know, she acted so weird that night,â he continues, sighing. âeven i was having a hard time figuring her out. her hands kept twitching and every time i slowed down at a red light, she looked like she was going to jump out of the car.âÂ
something cold crawls up your motherâs spine.Â
âshe⌠she wanted to get out?â
his lips press together before shrugging slightly. â i guess soâŚâ his lips curve into an almost regretful smile. âshe asked me to drop her off by the street but there was nothing, no houses, no stations⌠so i insisted that i drop her off at her friendâs house.â
your mother sways slightly on her feet. her head feels light. her breathingâheavy and uneven like sheâs going to hyperventilate and break down at any moment if she doesnât know what happened to her daughter.Â
âwhy did youâŚ?â her voice barely makes it past her lips.Â
âit didnât feel right to leave her in the middle of nowhere,â he looks down at her. his eyes narrow, emotionless. âi told her it wasnât safe. she cried, then went quiet for a long time after that.â
a lump forms in your motherâs throat. she thinks sheâs going to puke in the middle of the street.Â
you cried? oh lord, what happened to you?
he sighs, rubbing at the back of his neck. âthen i dropped her off at her friendâs house. âs all.â
her hands tremble as she clutches her bag tighter. âwhereâ? where is her friendâs house?âÂ
his fingers drum against his hips, licking his lips to wet them, he then gestures down the street with his index. his smile doesnât falter, it deepens just slightly that it seems thoughtful.Â
âitâs not that far,â he says, voice warm and kind. he looks down at your mother with the smile he had on when he studies your picture. âi can take you there, if youâd like.â
despite the cold sinking deep into her bones, despite the sick feeling curling in her gut, despite her motherâs instinct yelling and warning her noâshe nods.
because what else can she do?
with practiced ease, he folds the photograph between his fingers, slipping it into the back pocket of his jeans. she doesnât notice it.
oh, youâll love this.
