From its outset the Mini spawned many models that targeted different markets. Built as more luxurious versions of the Mini, both the Wolseley Hornet and the Riley Elf had longer, slightly finned rear wings and larger boots that gave the cars a more traditional three-box design. Wheelbase of the Elf and Hornet remained at 2.036 m (6.68 ft), whereas the overall length was increased to 3.27 m (10.7 ft). This resulted in a dry weight of 638 kg (Wolseley) 618kg (Riley). Mechanical specification was the same as the Mini but they feature wrap around rear bumpers, heater, screen-wash and a wind tone horn. The first series was powered by a 949cc S4 OHV version of the BMC A series engine The second series 1963-64 introduced the larger 998cc version on the BMC A series engine and twin leading shoe front brakes. The series three gets Hydrolastic suspension, a diaphragm clutch and key starting and from 1966 AP Automatic suspension became available. BMC introduced their Farina styled family car across their range beginning with the introduction of the upmarket Wolseley 15-60 from 1958 followed by the mass market Morris Oxford and Austin A55, and the more sporty Riley 4-68 and MG Magnette III. All of the models were powered by a 1489cc version of the BMC B Series engine, in different states of tune. Wolseley, together with the Austin Cambridge and the Morris Oxford, was at the bottom of the performance range with its single SU carburettor gave just 52 hp. The upholstery was in leather and had individual front seats that were set closely together to allow a central passenger to be carried allowing the car to be advertised as seating six although there was a floor mounted gear lever. The handbrake was between the driver's seat and the door. The rear seat had a folding central armrest. Wood veneer was used on the fascia and door cappings. A Smiths heater was fitted as standard. Either single or, as an option, two colour paint was used. The Farina range was refreshed from MY 1961. The 15/60 was replaced by the Wolseley 16/60 in September 1961 along with the rest of the range, the BMC B series engine capacity was increased to 1622cc, with the version in the Wolseley now producing 61bhp. Wolseley offered the option of a f Borg Warner 35 automatic transmission, the four speed manual still had no syncromesh on the bottom ratio Viewed from the outside, the Wolseley 16/60 was differentiated from the 15/60 by the overriders on the bumpers which protruded more than on the earlier car, the plastic mouldings on the rear lights were also modified along with the rear fins, now much reduced in their sharpness. The 1600 cc Farina models mostly remained in production through to 1968. Fantastic racing car with VSCC stalwart Roger Twelvetrees aboard After Herbert Austin left Wolseley to launch the eponymous Austin Motor Company in 1905, the marque reverted to a conventional vertical engine configuration to specifications by J.D. Siddeley, moving away from Austin’s famous horizontal design. From the first blueprints of 1906 up to the outbreak of World War I, Wolseley’s engines became more powerful over time. The 16/20 HP model was launched in 1910 and built around a four-cylinder engine with a capacity of 3,079 cc and an output of 20.3 horsepower. Later examples of the 16/20 HP featured a bevel final drive with a four-speed gearbox, while a combined air and oil pump deployed pressurised air to supply petrol from the tank to the carburettor.
