en: Iβm not sure why but the concept of Pathologic characters in the Wolfβs Rain anime setting struck me as incredibly awesome...

run, wolf warrior
speedpaint of kiba from wolf's rain! i watched it for the first time earlier this year and the whole time i found myself desperately wishing to have watched it as a kid.... however this is possibly for the best because if i watched it as a 13-year old it would have become my entire personality for the rest of my life
Fanart for Wolf's Rain from 2024
wolfs rain aired in the US in 2004 on toonami, and me being a wolf-obsessed little 13 year old who was hyperfocused on watching disney movies and drawing pages upon pages of animal characters, of course i was immediately transfixed when i happened to catch the first episode. i watched it religiously every week and got my friends to watch it too so we could have Discussions. i am not even exaggerating when i say the ending of that show felt like my first real experience with grief.
it was also particularly impactful for me because i desperately wanted to be an animator, and up until that point any media i watched that featured animated animal characters was stuff made for kids - balto and lion king and such. wolf's rain was the first time i saw animal characters animated with violence and blood and anger (and whats more, animated beautifully by the absolute legend that is yutaka nakamura) and it like. triggered something in my brain. like holy shit, you can make animal art that isnt a disney cartoon. you can animate wolves tearing each other apart and it looks sick as hell.
which is me saying: if you haven't watched wolf's rain and have even a vague passing interest, you gotta. the storys not perfect, but it is deeply emotional and captivating. the characters are intriguing. the world building is a shining example of show-don't-tell. the soundtrack/score is fucking phenomenal. the overall vibe is so beautiful and melancholy and ominous. and i also strongly recommend the english dub - absolutely all-star cast that crushes it. johnny young bosch and steve blum act their damn asses off.
it's a short show. it's 26 episodes (technically 26 episodes + 4 bonus OVAs, but eps 15-18 are recaps due to the 2003 sars pandemic, so the 4 OVAs are the true ending of the show). you can find it on streaming services like crunchyroll or find a free stream easily enough. do yourself a huge favor and don't look up anything about the show before you watch it to avoid spoilers. watch at least the first 3 episodes. do it for me π
