L is a corrupted phoenix kemonomimi who has been corrupted thanks to Hikari(God of Eternity and also Light's progenitor equivalent similar to Shizuka and Akane).
All of this is because of Hikari. He corrupted L, locked Shizuka in L's body and trapped Akane in B's body.
The doomed timeline is a story where L went through with absorbing Shizuka putting B in the position where he tried to stop L by threatening to kill himself(forcing Akane to absorb his soul).
Akane goes through with it causing B to die and the story follows the two as they grieve their lovers (for L its B and for Akane, Shizuka and B).
They are both bonded to A who is a kitsune kemonomimi in the process of awakening. His mind has regressed due to the trauma Hikari and corrupted L put him through (severing his tails to force him to continually regress and lose his memories not allowing him to fully awaken and regain his past memories of Wammys House).
A doesnt know B is dead. A unconditionally loves both L and B (despite the absolutely horrible things L did to him through the corruption process). But he is in tune with emotions so he can tell theyre both grieving.
L and Akane agree to put their differences aside and take care of A together while keeping B's death a secret forcing Akane to pretend to be B.
Akane ends up dreaming and talking with B one last time as B sits on the windowsill of his room in Wammys House in the dream sequence a blinding light blaring into the room from the window. Akane can only make out B as he asks if he made the right choice.
For Akane, Shizuka always chased after him and he never once thought there would be a day he would be gone. Conflicted feelings remain inside of him due to absorbing B and being forced with responsibilities and relationships he didnt sign up for. It eats away at him despite the fact B was just another one of his multiverse fragments (hell this wasnt even the original B!(bbafh B))
