•Virgil canonically used his powers to make a treehouse for the other kids when they were eight.

•He did it for Winterfall, which a holiday celebrating the winter solstice in Astari

•It’s traditional to exchange gifts with people, to brighten the darkness of winter. There’s also particular foods, special songs and prayers, and other stuff you’re supposed to do to honor the gods, especially Isalis and Masalla, gods of winter and death respectively. (Both are a bit more complex than that, but that’s what’s being respected through Winterfall.)

•As kids, they didn’t have lots of ways to get stuff, because they were being raised in a small forest protected by magic. So Virgil is trying to get gifts for his family, and he makes Emile and Remy those little coupons kids give adults for free chores or whatever + will be waking up early to make breakfast for the adults with the rest of the kids, but he hasn’t got anything for the other children

•There’s not a lot of pressure, because they aren’t used to extravagant gifts at all, but Virgil gets this idea in his head that he has to make this Winterfall special.

•So he’s stuck on ideas when Roman says they should pretend to be sky-pirates and Remus retorts that they’d need a tree base for that.

•Cue the lightbulb.

•So Virgil sneaks off into the forest the day before Winterfall and finds a really tall old tree that should hold all of their weight and uses his powers to give the tree the energy and resources it needs to literally grow a treehouse for these kids high up in the branches. 

•None of them are afraid of heights because Virgil’s always just been able to float them places, and that’s also the reason why he doesn’t include a ladder -- he’ll just levitate them up and down the tree.

•It ends up being awesome, even though it exhausts him, and he barely gets through dinner because of it before he falls asleep.

•Cue Winterfall morning, and he’s the only one not up early because he’s exhausted, but Patton and Janus pull him out of bed and downstairs so they can open presents.

•This poor child is just falling asleep in the rug surrounded by the presents everyone else gave him until Remus asks him why he used so much magic last night (Remus being able to see the traces of it on Virgil)

•That’s when he remembers his present for all of them

•So he practically drags the other five out of the house with Emile and Remy following behind, all of them kind of throwing on their snowboots and coats while he nags them

•(And if Virgil used his powers to give them a snowy holiday, well, that’s all the cuter)

•And finally he just points upwards and 

•Treehouse!

•Everyone’s excited and Roman and Remus immediately challenge each other to see who can climb up to it fastest and meanwhile Virgil’s tired and is half-asleep as he squints at the other kids going up, but he’s still making sure they’re not going to fall with his magic

•Fast forward-

•They have some glorious months in the treehouse, and it’s wonderful. They each carve their first initial in the trunk (R, J, V, L, P, R) and convince Emile and Remy to do the same above theirs. They have sleepovers in it in warm weather, and stargaze, and have all kinds of adventures, and it’s amazing. 

•They name it Maple Manor, despite Logan protesting that “it isn’t a maple tree, why would we call it Maple Manor?!”

•They love it

•...And then the July after Virgil makes the treehouse, he runs away. They all wake up one morning, and he’s gone, with an empty bed and his coat missing from the closet.

•(This is because of story reasons that are spoilers so shh)

•For a little bit, Roman was convinced Virgil was just hiding in Maple Manor

•But Emile and Remy ban them from going up there without the magic as a safeguard for if they fall, because there’s no ladder and it just isn’t safe without Virgil there.

•Finally, Roman gets into the treehouse in late August, and...

•Virgil’s nowhere to be seen, but there’s a rope ladder rolled up at the top near the door, something that wasn’t there before, because he was always going to be there to make sure they could get up and down without one.

•That’s when Roman knows he isn’t coming back

•The kids now can get back into the treehouse, but every time they do it isn’t fun anymore because Virgil isn’t there

•Eventually, Logan climbs into the treehouse via the branches and uses one of Remy’s kitchen knives to cut down the ladder

•None of the kids ever go back into Maple Manor, even though some of them still have stuff in there

•Because everything about it reminds them of Virgil

•And how he’s left them forever.

welp oops

i cannot do a new wip right now. i should do chemistry. i cannot create a shitty sideblog for wodah or immortal sides au, no matter how much i want to, simply because i can’t art. i should also do history. i cannot keep working on wodah if i’m not going to publish it before bluebells is finished. i should additionally do math, english, spanish, and art. 

I finished the first chapter of wodah! 

I’m very very happy, but I can’t post it until my tagging system is fixed (tumblr, why do you have to be so broken) and I don’t want to publish it until Bluebells is finished. I may go back on that, but the first chapter of weary of days and hours (desires and dreams and powers) is done!

It’s fifteen pages and 5418 words, which isn’t a lot for me, but as it’s definitely just the exposition chapter and we’re not even into the story yet, I’m proud!
