Maren did not grow up in a pet friendly household. Her grandmother thought pets were messy and disgusting, so Maren was not allowed to have one, not even when she left for Hogwarts. Although she had classmates who thought it was incredibly weird, Maren didn’t particularly mind not having a pet. When she moved to London after graduation, Maren had no plans to alter her petless state. She figured she’d be too busy with her mediwitch training to take care of another living creature. That all changed one day when a friend dragged her into Magical Menagerie. Maren took one look at the strange little cat, ugly as sin with too big ears and weirdly bumpy fur, and had to have it. She knew in her heart that no one else would love the bizarre little creature, so she had to. When the pet shop employee explained that the cat’s breed was a Cornish Rex, it felt like fate. Maren took the cat home and named her Piskie, not yet realizing just how apt that name would turn out to be. Maren quickly learned that Cornish Rex cats have a talent for trouble, and Piskie proved to be just as mischievous as the pixies she was named for. There is a certain extent to which the cat is the bane of Maren’s existence, but she also loves her fiercely. She’s recently begun taking Piskie for trips out and about London, hoping the adventures will expend some of the cat’s destructive energy.

Lilavati has a very feminine wardrobe full of dresses in bright colors with bold, often floral, patterns. She is not opposed to frills and embellishments and tends toward longer lengths. She’s not afraid to show some cleavage, and she likes to balance elegance with comfort, preferring loose and flowy cuts to fitted or tight.The dominant color of her wardrobe is red, but she does have other shades mixed in as well.

When the time came to choose what pet she would bring with her to Hogwarts, Eleanora took the decision very seriously. She knew she wanted a cat, seeing as she couldn’t have an owl due to her allergy and no one wanted a rat or toad, but she wanted to be very careful about what breed of cat she got. After a great deal of research she settled onto a Russian Blue, a cat known for its loyalty, intelligence, and gentility. Eleanora liked the idea that her cat would be a constant but unobtrusive companion, as well as the fact that Russian Blues tend to pick one person in particular to be their favorite and shun most others. When the Burkes went to pick up Eleanora’s kitten, the breeder talked them into taking home two, a pair of sisters particularly devoted to each other. Eleanora named them Aine and Brigid, after figures from Irish mythology, and decided that both would come with her to Hogwarts. She was well aware that technically each student was only allowed one pet, but she figured no one would notice an extra cat roaming the halls. And even if someone did, what would they do about it? Aine and Brigid are both paragons of their breed; faithful, elegant, and reserved, they suit Eleanora perfectly. 

Lily was eight years old when she rescued a scrawny, feral kitten from a dumpster behind the school where her father taught. After several baths, and much complaining on the part of Lily’s mother, it was discovered that the kitten was a grey, male tabby, and he was christened Cheshire, after the cat from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Chess, as he quickly became known, was initially not terribly interested in being a house pet, but it turned out that Lily was more stubborn than he, and with much time and patience, and many forced cuddle sessions that often ended with claws and tears, he resigned himself to his fate. Over the years Chess has been Lily’s most constant companion, following her to Hogwarts and beyond, and he now loves his owner fiercely. He also loves Harry, as the little boy is an extension of Lily, and Chess was the first creature to realize she was pregnant. He is somewhat fond of Mary and Marlene, due to the forced exposure of living in a dorm with them for seven years, but he does not like anyone else. He is largely tolerant of James, but still occasionally swats at his ankles and likes to sneeze on his glasses.

Chu-Hua was the most constant presence in Eleanora’s childhood, and still wields the most influence over her. Most of Eleanora’s world view and understanding of femininity come from her mother. Chu-Hua taught her that her first responsibility is to her family and its legacy. Eleanora is fiercely proud of her heritage and willing to put her family above everything, even her own happiness, and this comes from Chu-Hua. Chu-Hua also taught Eleanora that it is better to be underestimated and to never let people know just how capable she truly is. Eleanora was raised to believe that being a woman means being logical and strategic, being able to take a step back, see the whole board, and make the hard decisions when no one else can. Femininity means controlling your emotions and pulling the strings behind the scenes.
