A Different Perspective
We are shallow people.
Our minds are cluttered with concern
Not for the impressions we leave
Or the difference we make
But for how we look
How others perceive us.
When we meet new people
We immediately judge them
Simply from the way they wear their hair
Or how they dress
Or the blemishes on their skin.
Thus is the wonder of meeting someone
Who lives thousands of miles away.
Suddenly the basic instinct
To judge based on appearance
Is stripped away
And we’re left instead
With their personality, raw and open.
Over time we fall in love with
The little things
Like the way they sound at two in the morning
Or the simple familiarity of their laughter.
You could recognize them in a crowd
Of a million people
Just by the sound of their voice
The mannerisms in their language
The sayings they use most.
And then comes the day
Where you see them for the first time.
But there is no judgement
Because you know them already
Inside and out.
You’ve never seen them
But you already love them.
