Witchy red flag #2: Practitioners who prescribe crystals for health issues.
Now I’m not saying that rose quartz can’t help your anxiety, but what I am saying is DO NOT carry a rock around instead of taking your meds. DO NOT tell people that xyz rock can help with diabetes.
These are real things I have seen being spread around in this community.
Like hello???
Also, this is a lowkey call out post for “The Good Witch’s Guide” by Charity Bedell & Shawn Robbins. There are sections in this book that are guilty of this very issue, with no disclaimer to be found. Obvi, it’s kind of an unspoken rule that when it comes to witchy books, you gotta use discernment level 100. But it’s also exhausting that it needs to be this way. These people shouldn’t be allowed to just put “yeah cuddle this quartz to get rid of your heart disease” without THOROUGH disclaimers present.
All this being screamed said, I am a crystal witch 💀 I love those shiny bastards, and I use them regularly in my life and in my practice. But I also understand that they cannot perform miracles.
I sincerely hope that anyone who has been victimized by this weird concept wins their lawsuit against those authors 😀

In this post you will find a few types of red flags and why they are red flags in reference to witchcraft or the witch community.
This is more of an opinion post, but I will also mention why I think you should steer clear of these flags and you can decide on your own what you will do, it is always your choice. C:
Stay away from people who:
believes that magic or witchcraft alone can cure mental or physical illness
Magic or witchcraft should never replace your medications or treatments. There are many ways in which magic can help us feel better, and maybe some folks have been lucky; but do not trust anyone who tells you to stop getting treatment or to stop taking your medication.
are bigots
Sadly even in witchcraft/magic communities there are bigots. Racists, homophobes, sexists, transphobes, and the like.
Sometimes we’re lucky enough that we can see their true colors right off the bat, so it’s easier to stay away from those ones. Generally if your gut tells you to stay away, then it’s best that you listen.
try to use witchcraft/magic as a means to control others
This could mean love potions, non-consensual hypnosis, or any type of spell that involves controlling another person. (Even if it never works it’s messed up that they’re even trying)
This can also mean trying to threaten you with a hex or curse if you don’t do what they want. Abusers find their slimy little ways into all sorts of communities, so if you see this flag run far away.
judge your magic/craft based on how long you’ve been practicing/ learning.
I have practiced or learned witchcraft since I was 14, but I have learned more in the last two years than I had in any of the previous years. Why? Because what matters is research and learning from others, looking at different styles of witchcraft and finding out how to ethically practice witchcraft.
Just because someone has been practicing for years doesn’t mean they know everything. The best teachers will still consider themselves students, always ready and willing to learn more.
try to make you do sexual things
I won’t go into too much detail here but please, if someone says the only way to do XYZ is for you to sleep with them…they’re lying. Sex magic is a real thing and it’s wonderful if everyone involved wants to do it, but if you have to be pressured by magic to do it then you need to run from whoever is telling you those lies.
disrespect closed practices or religions.
Self explanatory. If they don’t respect closed practices they are ignorant at best, malevolent at the worst.
thinks only women can be witches
No, any one of any gender can be a witch, steer clear of anyone who talks down on other genders. It’s not only harmful in general, but the witchcraft community should strive for peace and communication, not hatred and bigotry.
uses a spiritually or culturally important title (i.e. Shaman, Witch Doctor, Priest, Priestess, etc.) but shows no evidence or credentials to back this claim.
Of course there are the people who jokingly or ironically use these titles in usernames or as nicknames, but that’s not who I am referring to. I mean the people who try to sell you things using their title as evidence of it working, but have nothing to back the title they claim to have.
say they can talk to a deity for you when you can’t talk to that deity yourself.
I’m not going to say that other people can’t talk to a deity that you talk to, or that they can’t bring you messages from a deity. (I mean, I had an entire experience recently where my friend’s deity had to reach out to me as a last ditch effort since they weren't listening. So it does happen!)
Always be wary, especially if you’ve never talked to the deity yourself, you don’t personally know whoever is saying they can, or if they are trying to sell it to you.
If a deity wanted to speak with you, they probably wouldn’t make you pay a stranger just to get through to you.
doesn’t believe in history or scientific fact.
I know that it seems like magic and science are opposites, but they aren’t. Arguably, magic is just science we don’t fully understand yet/can’t explain!
So if someone is trying to discredit what we know to be true from science or history, and they have no evidence backing them up, it’s probably a good idea to stay away from them.
Stay away from shops that:
sell endangered or unethically sourced herbs like white sage and palo santo.
if you’re not from the cultures who use these and a native person from that culture does not give it to you saying that it’s ok for you to use it, do not buy from them.
sell you potions, tinctures, etc. as "medicine" without any peer reviewed studies.
You want to make sure if you’re buying some sort of herbal supplement that you’re going to ingest in some way, that there is solid research backing the product and that it is safe to use. (Is it FDA approved?)
won’t tell you what’s in their products.
It’s not only bad business practice, but it’s also possibly dangerous to sell a product without disclosing what is in it.
try to gouge you of your money.
This one is more of an intuitive thing, if you think it’s too good to be true (whatever it is) and they’re selling it at an extremely high price, it probably is too good to be true.
try to sell some sort of certification into or involving a closed practice
Generally, or the closed practices I am aware of at least, you can’t buy your way into. If someone is telling you that they can sell a membership or certification into one of these closed practices, they’re probably lying so they can get your money.
Stay away from resources that:
say there is only one way to practice magic, and that it is the way written in the book
say that Wicca is an ancient religion (it was created in the 1940’s, I have a whole post about wicca)
don’t link their sources when stating “facts”
teach anything from a closed religion when they are not part of the closed religion
DO NOT DO ANYTHING involving closed religions without making sure it is ok. If you are not born or initiated into the religion, it’s best to not try any of their practices as it is disrespectful and, in some cases, could even be dangerous.
teaches myth/lore as fact
In my experience, most folks who work with deities agree that myths are not fact when it comes to the deities involved. You could almost liken it to gossip; you may get a whisper of truth here and there, but until you speak to them yourself you have no clue who they are as a person (or god!).
Also, here is a source of authors to stay away from (they even give you reasons as to why)
Alright, I think I hit most of the important and the most common ones. If you have more suggestions, please add them in the replies or reblog this post with them!
Witchy Red Flag #1: It’s weird to name yourself after a deity.
Like, it’s one thing to be named like that by your parents, you didn’t have any say in that matter. That’s not what I’m ranting about today. It’s a different thing entirely to choose your craft name/witch name to be that of a deity and it’s strange. Essentially you’re telling everyone else that you view yourself as being on the same level as sed deity. In my experience, I’ve only known people who do this to have insane god complexes and very fragile egos.
I can imagine that some deities also take this as an insult lmao. I’m sure some of them think it’s cool too, but still ive never encountered someone who does this and isn’t insufferable sooooo…I can’t imagine that there are many deities who like this.
Also examples like Aphrodite who will wreck people if they compare her to other women/deities exist like hello lmao
Now that I’m back on this blog, let’s celebrate by pissing some people off 💀 I plan on making this “witchy red flags” a series of sorts, so buckle up.
My friend found this online and sent it to me saying it reminded him of some candles we saw at the ren faire that said similar stuff: “adhd relief”, “bipolar relief”, “depression cure” etc.
Guys, most disorders like these can’t be “cured” and they certainly can’t be cured by crystals and rocks. These bracelets are ableist new age bullshit and the creator of them should be ashamed.
Instead of “relieving” someone of their disorder (which perpetuates a fucked up idea that there’s something wrong with them for having it in the first place), we should be teaching people real coping mechanisms and ways to exist in this inherently neurotypical world.
You do not need to be relieved of your autism, adhd, or whatever you may have. There are real resources you can find to help you navigate this disorder-unfriendly world.
Be wary of places that sell stuff like this. It’s often one step away from eugenics; trying to rid the world of various disorders and such.
Some toxic witch shit/red flags I've seen and what you should watch out for:
1. Considering things "low vibrational" if they don't personally like it or saying being "low vibrational" is bad and basically the whole idea that you have to be happy and full of love and light all the time and if you aren't, you're being a witch wrong. Negative emotions are just as important as positive emotions, and in order to have a stable mind you must give ALL your emotions the respect and validation they deserve. You're only human.
2. Fear mongering in general/gate keeping. Things like "don't do this OR ELSE" or "YoU cAnT wOrK wItH eClIpSe EnErGy!" Or "you can't just give sigils new meanings!" Or even when witches won't explain their process when you ask questions without actually explaining any reason why.
"Why can't I do this?"
"BeCaUsE!"
"How were you able to do this?"
Radio silence
Idk something about not sharing how a spell or ritual works when they act like they know everything is kinda shadey to me.
3. Anyone who says you HAVE to worship or work with deities, or people who think they're better than you because they "work with more deities than you’ll ever learn the names of little kid." Lame as fuck. Honestly might start ironically calling people like this "low vibrational" just to be petty and pretentious lol.
4. People who try to force you into practicing three fold law. Those who claim karma will hurt you if you hex someone 1. Doesn't understand what karma is, and 2. Doesn't understand is a personal belief and not universal.
5. Witches who think taking medications interferes with your power and tells you to stop taking them, and witches who say they can cure illnesses whether it's mental or physical. Those witches are wrong. 𝘋𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘱 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘮𝘦𝘥𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘥𝘰𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳.
6. People who threaten to hex/curse you if you don't do what they say, or claim to know that you will be hexed if you don't do a certain thing. Please try to ignore these people.
7. ANYONE who thinks their beliefs are facts. I see this most often in occult books where the author has spent their whole lives being spiritual and therefore thinks they know all the facts about the afterlife/where spirits come from/how to properly summon energy. All these theories are extremely useful and I think they should be written about, but they are not facts. It's definitely good to read books like these because they're very interesting and broaden your own ideas, but there is really no proof for anything so don't just immediately believe everything you hear, explore these topics yourself.
8. Similar to number two: witches who claim they "sense" dark/negative energy around you, or claim that the deity you work with is actually telling them you're doing something wrong. Anyone who claims something horrible is about to happen to you or that your cursed and they offer to do a cleansing ritual for money. These people are trying to scare and scam you.
9. Witches who practice unethical love spells and also pretend these spells aren't baneful/harmful. Controlling someone's free will is and always will be unethical. If you're gonna interfere with free will at least be honest and get off your high horse. I DO NOT CONDONE LOVE SPELLS THAT INTERFERE WITH FREE WILL IN ANY WAY. If you do that type of gross shit I am not the person you want to follow.
