The first Witcher game is proving to be a really fun story, the further into it I get.
It has some silly bits, which are honestly like comic relief to me in a game centered on a guy who exists to hunt monsters, and so there’s a lot of people he gets sent to find and they’re just dead, which is really sad and I’m starting to get fatigued on just recovering stuff from dead bodies…
…which isn’t the point I’m trying to make here.
Anyway! Yeah, the goofy bits mostly just feel like an older game made by a company that was just starting up with big games, and it’s charming. The fighting is easy enough to figure out, so when my brain is tired it’s not excruciating to play and see more of the story unfold.
The limited inventory space makes sense for Geralt’s pouches. The variety of ingredients is really engaging to go around and find in all the different places, and the learning mechanic of reading the books and the journal entries as you go along restoring Geralt’s know-how is challenging at first, since coin is precious, but having to balance all the expenses has been nice. It keeps the game from being too easy.
I like it.
The quests involve a lot of running around, which could be irritating if the maps were bigger, but they aren’t. They’re just limited enough that it’s not an awful chore to go complete quests and fulfill contracts. And the quest instructions aren’t so clearly itemized and detailed that it takes all the fun of figuring out the real problems you have to address and how to deal with them, which also feeds into the consequences of your decisions.
I’m on Chapter 4 out of I believe 5, and it’s been a fun ride so far. It’s a nice game.
