Winged Wheel - La Station Gare des Mines, Paris, France, January 20, 2026
Over on Aquarium Drunkard last week, I scribbled a little something about Winged Wheel's third LP, the fabulous Desert So Green. It's got all the stuff I've loved about previous WW releases, plus plenty of added attractions, exploring woozy shoegaze zones (woozegaze?!), getting into Murray Street-era Sonic Youth situations (hey, Steve Shelley is in the band, it comes naturally) and plenty more uncategorizable areas. It's great, and as I say in the review, it really sounds like a band, individuals coming together for the greater good. And that's what it's all about, right?
Winged Wheel just wrapped up their first European tour a few weeks back. They went hard, with more than a dozen dates in a row — no nights off! And judging from a nicely shot video from the Paris gig, it all paid off. The band soars effortlessly through the set, guitars intertwining, violin droning, rhythm section driving. The whole thing is capped off by a glorious version of Neil and Crazy Horse's "Danger Bird," flying above the city of light like a shadow on the sky.
The avant-rock supergroup's third album is overflowing with ideas yet still neatly contained.
