Not an American #wine on #july4th but a great bottle nevertheless. This 2005 might be among my very favorite Pegau Reservee ever. Apart from the usual kirsch, garrigue and licorice, this has RACY acidity, black tea and soy sauce notes and a fantastic perfumed quality to it. This is what top tier CdP is to me personally. 2016 Avignonesi Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is a bit of a weird wine to me. Certainly very different from what I expected. Cherries, dried herbs and sandalwood on the nose and palate. The texture is light and silky and acidity is quite high.. Overall this drinks a lot like a villages Burgundy (much cheaper though). The bad news is that the midpalate is slightly hollow and the finish relatively short. Perfectly drinkable but not suitable to serve alongside very hearty fare (like steak or traditional Bolognese). More appropriate for lighter dishes like grilled chicken, pork and pastas without heavy tomato based sauces.
