In Tribute to Dave Hughes The South African wine industry is collectively mourning the loss of Dave Hughes today. I’m so thankful that he received his flowers while he was still with us, and that I was touched by his generosity. Dave was on hand to grace me with kind words when I was awarded the @veritas_awards Young Wine Writer of the year award in 2016. Dave was a seasoned winemaker, distiller, journalist, consultant, international wine and spirits judge and often wrote for @winelandmedia. Our hearts are with those who treasured him most, he left an indelible mark. Wineland under deep blue sky The Marlbotough region around Blenheim city is the largest wine producing area in the South Island. And in addition to world quality wine and food produce, it is also incrediblle beautiful. In this particular area they produce the famous Cloudy Bay, a white wine considered among the worlds best. For obvious reasons. But admittedly, staying here for some days will not be a disappointment, because there are some serious, great competitors. And the guests taste buds are the really winner. Really rough and tumble fight. Damn good fight between Wineland and Popov. The fight sort of boiled down to Wineland realizing early and often that Popov could not avoid a right hand to save his life. He also had great timing on Popov’s powerful yet readable kicks. Wineland always had a counter chambered up when Popov would fire in those leg kicks and Wineland rocked Popov five times with right hands prior to the finish and then the sixth and final one shut Popov down against the cage. Popov has no idea of what defense is and while it limits his long term upside, I thought offensively he did some wild stuff. Really fun fight and Wineland got one of those trademark finishes that convinces people he’s still got something to offer a tough nasty division.
