im finally making time to sit down and write this post. it's very important to me that people get the fact that maxwell gotch does not lack whimsy. in fact he's fucking full of it. the reason why the rest of the crew (and many others) interprets max as whimsiless is two reasons: the inherent whimsy and wish he was born with was psychologically beaten out of him and he's on the autism spectrum. not even talking about the obvious part of longspot's anger and anti-mindset and the practicality of his brothers, max's hero, his grandfather, the man who made sure max didn't lose his sense of adventure entirely in adulthood, also limited it. the very first scene, "we stay on the ground." max was running around the ship and docks (like the nine year old he was) and cadswitch called him back and said "this is what we live for and why humanity's great but we stay on the ground." van asks max minutes later if he wants a tour and climb around on the ship and max says "no, im supposed to stay on the ground." not no i don't want to or no im scared to or no i already did it or whatever. it is no, he's not allowed to. and sure, cadswitch probably didn't it mean it that way and certainly not that strict, but to my second point, maxwell is one of the most blatant autistic-coded pcs on a dimension 20 season thus far. every single time the other players call him out for his thinking i follow his logic impeccably. he does not like when the villains break the rules that he made up in his head during battle. he asks people outright about comfrey because there is no legitimate reason to think random zoodians would be against them. when he flubs with the crew and they tell him it's a tone issue he genuinely does not hear a difference in his tone and theirs. he likes monty's books but does not see a reason to lie to him about the later ones. he only got interested about the ship's weapons when he heard there were boxing-themed weapons. growing up autistic means that when everyone else is figuring out how to be an adult you're figuring out how to be an adult and human. max had one person he looked up to and took his instructions on how to act from (subconsciously even). "we stay on the ground." that's a clear rule that's been given. you listen to those. max is so full of whimsy that it eventually conquered the rules he'd made up for himself on how to be a human. who started this season? who hijacked the zephyr from the investors to take it on one final adventure? who believed in zood without anyone's encouragement? who was the one who decided that comfrey was being found (and potentially rescued) even if it meant going to another world? and i don't think any of the original crew even knows this. max got olethra first and i think that they were approached by comfrey's granddaughter with a gotch and assumed it was the same arrangement. max came and got olethra. max asked pappy to follow with. max said "we're gonna find comfrey no matter what." max is not chasing his grandfather's legacy, he surpassed it a long fucking time ago. he is new to adventuring and he is learning. he does not realise when he does adventuring "wrong" but he is learning. "get whimsy, gotch" you would still be stuck in a failing toy shop in scrapsylvania without gotch's whimsy, marya. "get whimsy, gotch" you would still be terrified of the sea, your home, and your own body if it wasn't for gotch's whimsy, van. it does not present as you want it, expect it, or even can imagine it, but by god is that boy whimsical
ohhhhhhh i get it now! the break from cloudward ho next week is to give us time to recover from whatever that adventuring party was.

after haunting the narrative for so long, we finally get to see comfrey macleod
i think marya’s words have it best: she is great, but not a good person
she has this endless drive for exploration and always wants to be the problem solver. infinite ambition untempered because she runs from the repercussions of her actions. centering herself as the adventurer rather than being among a group of adventurers. the best place for information is in her hands.
like arguably, of the og zephyr crew, the ones she took with her were not the most suited to exploring zood. we’ve seen monty and his affinity for nature being an incredible strength. marya’s simultaneous expertise and intuition for the physical and mechanical elements of the world. van’s rapid adjustment to the language and the use of her skills as a sailor to keep the crew moving. pappy always serving as a protector and keeping it light. we don’t know exactly the insights that haunch, sylvio, and onion bring to the table, but the four at our table were certainly missed.
they’re incredible adventurers. but all of them were affected by the consequences of comfrey’s actions, like it or not. max and olethra are no exception.
the ends justify the means for comfrey macleod. it used to be that the means were fixed in the course of her work by her crew, likely without her acknowledging it. now, her mistakes have spiraled out of control.
During their next adventure the crew of the Zephyr 2 run into some weird plant that temporarily deages people.
Maxwell is the only one hit. So the crew have to take care of nine-year-old Maxwell.
But the thing is. It didn't block his memories.
Maxwell fully remembers his whole life, he's just nine-year-old shaped at the moment.
But he's not telling anyone that, because, well. He wants to know if the rougher way the Wind Riders treat him compared to Olethra is an age difference thing (he's nearly thirty to her newly twenty) or a they don't like him as much thing.
And, also? People will sit down and explain to a child why there's something wrong with his tone instead of just saying "tone issue" and leaving him to flounder.
It's not really lying since he isn't claiming to not have memories. He's just not correcting them.

Idk about Comfrey, I'm sure she had sunk-cost fallacied herself and was genuinely in a mental & financial spiral of some kind, but i think if Monty LaMontgommery raised his voice while telling me "You are putting people at risk. You are putting places at risk. At some point, you have to look yourself in the goddamn mirror and take some responsibility" I would absolutely 180° my entire life.
I would go to therapy, I would offer restitution to everyone in my life I'd ever hurt, I would eat heart-healthy and do yoga, I would destroy the ministry of deranged science with my bare hands and build a community center in its ashes
Like,,, if you're in an argument with monty and he's genuinely irate then you're in the wrong. That's just fact. Scientifically proven. You fucked up.
Though the whole thing is a really interesting look at relationship breaking points when there are no good options. Like, Comfrey obviously was in dire need of help and not just people going along with her behavior, but its impossible to force help on another person if they're unwilling to take it.
And the people that would push back on her BS were also the ones most fundamentally hurt by her actions. They deserved to gtfo and have lives beyond Comfrey manically grasping at a dream, however real that dream may be, while she dragged them down with her.
The ones that wouldn't put up with her bullshit, didn't put up with it. They left. And that in & of itself should've been a wakeup call.
But rather than seeing it as people doing what's best for themselves, and being moved by the understanding that what's best for them is getting away from you, it seems like Comfrey drowned herself in a resentment of them.
Like, Monty is the realest fucking adventurer. He has to be reminded not to wander off on his own to chase creatures, he's pure of heart and advenurous of spirit while also warmly inviting everyone to partake of that same joy. The wind rider club, his inspiration from Olethra's nervous attempts at coolness, his cool handling of Maxwell's tone issue. That is a good fucking man right there.
So Zood is a place of abundance with everything everyone needs and more, Zern is a place of very little with people who don’t need much to survive, and Gath is a place of limited resources than many want to control. Three types of almost planar outlooks, utopian collectivism, subsistive realism, and corporate greed. Then there’s Comfrey and the Wind Riders, who break all the rules. Living lives that nearly always have enough, choosing to enter perilous situations, and often for personal gain, but not in a wealth hoarding sense. It’s no wonder that they amaze every person they meet. And even less of a wonder that once one of them feels like they’re different than even these extraordinary people, they choose to push even deeper. Living off less and less, being more and more dangerous, and finding every way to reach their own ends, no matter the cost. Comfrey McCloud is, and always was, a larger than life figure, and now that’s expanded to be larger than three whole worlds.
