The castle was alive with activity, and you were just one of the many new maids trying to find your way in the chaos of it all. You had been assigned to laundry duty, mostly for Airk and Kit Tanthalos, as their clothes were always in need of washing. You didn’t mind—there was something almost meditative about scrubbing clothes by the river with soap, a wooden washboard, and your thoughts. Plus, it gave you a chance to catch glimpses of Kit.

From the first day you saw her training in the courtyard, you had the biggest crush on Kit. She moved with a fierce elegance, her dark hair catching the light as she sparred with Jade. It wasn’t long before you found yourself stealing glances whenever you could, feeling your cheeks heat whenever she was around.

Today, you were on your normal route, heading to Kit’s room to pick up her dirty clothes. You expected the usual—a mess of training gear thrown carelessly on the bed—but what you didn’t expect was to walk in on Kit herself. She had finished her training early, and as you entered with your basket, she was in the process of taking her shirt off.

For a few seconds, you froze, your eyes widening as you stared at her toned back. The shock and embarrassment rendered you unable to move, and it wasn’t until Kit turned around, her eyes narrowing, that you snapped out of it.

“Do you mind?” Kit snapped, clearly annoyed. “Ever heard of knocking?”

“I-I’m so sorry, Your Highness!” you stammered, your face burning as you turned on your heel and fled the room. You practically ran to the kitchen, your heart pounding. You decided to stay there for a while, not wanting to face Kit again after what had just happened. It was mortifying, and you could only hope she wouldn’t hold it against you.

Meanwhile, Kit was still in her room, buttoning up a fresh shirt, a mix of irritation and something else she couldn’t quite place. Who was that maid, and why had she never noticed her before? Despite her initial annoyance, she had to admit that the girl was… beautiful.

Later in the day, Kit was hanging out with Jade. The two of them strolled through the gardens, talking about nothing in particular. As they turned a corner, Kit spotted you by the river, washing clothes with your wooden washboard. She was too distracted to watch where she was stepping, and she ended up stepping right into the clean pile of clothes with her dirty boot.

You looked up at her, and for a moment, your eyes met. You were clearly annoyed, though you kept your mouth shut, probably thinking she was angry for earlier. Kit stared at you, and for the first time, she saw your face fully, noticing your soft features and the determination in your eyes as you went back to scrubbing.

Kit and Jade walked a bit further before Jade nudged her, a grin on her face. “What’s up with you?” Jade asked.

Kit frowned. “What do you mean?”

Jade gestured back toward the river. “That maid. You were staring at her. What happened?”

Kit brushed it off, explaining what had happened earlier in her room. “It’s just weird. I’ve never seen her before, and now she’s everywhere. And… I don’t know, I feel strange around her.”

Jade smirked, giving her a knowing look. “You sure you don’t fancy her?”

Kit rolled her eyes. “That’s nonsense. I’ve known her for a few hours.”

But as the days went on, Kit realized that Jade was right. She found herself looking for you around the castle, her heart beating a little faster whenever she caught sight of you. She wanted to talk to you, to get to know you better, but there was something holding her back. She didn’t know what she had with Jade—whether it was something real or just a comfortable closeness.

One day, while sparring with Jade, Kit finally brought it up. “What are we, anyway?” she asked, her voice hesitant.

Jade paused, lowering her practice sword. She gave Kit a small smile, understanding dawning on her. “We’re friends, Kit. Maybe something more once, but not anymore. You should go talk to her.”

Kit felt a weight lift off her shoulders, and she nodded. After sparring, she changed clothes and set out to find you. She asked one of the maids where you were, and they told her you were by the river, washing clothes.

She found you there, your hands moving rhythmically as you scrubbed a shirt against the washboard. You looked up when you saw her approaching, your eyes wary. “Your Highness,” you said politely, “is there something you need?”

Kit awkwardly squatted down next to you, surprising you. She picked up a second wooden washboard and placed it in the river beside yours. You looked at her like she was crazy, and Kit couldn’t help but take it personally.

“I want you to teach me how to do this,” she said, pulling her own training clothes out of a small sack. She had taken them from her room, hoping to use this as an excuse to get closer to you.

You blinked, surprised. After a moment, you nodded, deciding that she meant no harm. You showed her how to use the washboard, moving your hands skillfully. Kit watched closely before attempting it herself, but her frustration grew as the dirt refused to come out.

“This is exactly what it’s always like with your clothes,” you said, unable to keep the hint of amusement from your voice. “They’re always the hardest to clean.”

Kit huffed, her annoyance clear. She pressed down harder, and you winced as you heard the fabric tear.

“Here, let me help,” you said, moving closer to her. You reached for her hands, guiding them gently as you showed her the right pressure to use. Kit’s cheeks flushed slightly, but she managed to hide it, focusing on the feel of your hands over hers.

After a moment, Kit playfully splashed you with water, a smirk on her face. You gasped, looking at her in shock. Before you could stop yourself, you splashed her back, and soon the two of you were laughing, water flying everywhere as you tried to outdo each other.

Across the courtyard, Jade and Elora stood, watching the scene unfold. Elora sighed, handing a small pouch of coins to Jade, who grinned triumphantly.

“I can’t believe you bet on this,” Elora muttered, shaking her head with a smile.

Jade shrugged, her eyes still on you and Kit. “Told you she’d go for it. Kit’s stubborn, but she knows what she wants.”

Elora watched as Kit finally managed to pin you down, her laughter echoing across the courtyard. “They do look happy,” she said softly, a smile tugging at her lips.
